So, I got an offer for a 'guest' post, and I responded with my standard 'well, I do accept sponsored posts with original content that do not read like an advertisement, and my rates are as follows'.

I just got my response from this person saying 'well, we usually don't do sponsored posts because our articles are such high quality that we don't usually pay for these articles.  However, given the data for your site on compete.com, we could offer blah blah blah'.

So, they basically decided to use the worst possible metric to measure my website, which is hilarious.  I told them that compete.com currently underestimates my traffic by more than 80 percent and perhaps they should consider a more reliable indicator like Mozrank or Page Rank.

I am sure if compete.com OVER estimated my traffic, they would find some other benchmark.

Hear Hear.

Compete told me my traffic went down 400% from March to May.  Uh, sure …

OMG… I had never heard of this "compete" site but I just plugged my site in to see what it told me and they claim that basically my site is non-existent.  I am sure the thousands of legitimate users that visit my site each month would disagree with their metrics.  Thanks for the laugh!

Just heard from yet another advertiser I had responded to (not the one mentioned above), and they told me they don't really use Page Rank to measure a site's web significance.

When I was a 0 or 1, everyone cared about my page rank.  Now that I am a 4, nobody cares about Page Rank anymore??  Funny.

Oh I know!  I emailed wisebread about my concerns, but of course, nothing changed.  I don't know one person that site is accurate for, what a joke.

It says that MITR doesnt have a profile on its site…so Im not listed at all.  Let's hope not many advertisers put stock into it.

Consider yourself lucky, in a way.  Their system is a joke/mess.  I tried to get them to DROP us and they declined repeatedly.

Oh, I've gotten similar emails and correspondence.  Thing is, I think that when dealing with some people in negotiations, they're not looking for a win-win. Rather, they're looking to get what they want at as little cost to them as possible.

Whatever stats can support paying you as little as possible are the ones that might be referenced. On the other hand, you can reference your stats that substantiate paying you as much as possible. Seems like that's the way to deal with such folks in business.

It's much better and more fun working with those who get the win-win concept. In my advertising page I state that same thing, that Squirrelers believes in a win-win. Some play ball, some don't!

Compete.com underestimates my traffic by about 80% as well.

Suba – I thought about trying to register and seeing if I needed to install a tracking code like with Quantcast, but I only saw paid account options.

Is there a free option I missed?

Yes, there is a free option (or at least used to be, I will check now and post it here) and some months it is still off but not more than +/- 20% usually.

I registered.  It hasn't yet recorded a full month's data of traffic, though.

Major downside: Compete.com only cares about traffic to the homepage, which I definitely don't have. :-/

Suba – I don't see any reference to any registration w/ compete in my email (deleted or otherwise).

Where would this "code" be placed if it was "installed"?

I don't know if I got this in the email after I registered or not (I registered almost 6 months ago I think, so forgot). I do have the code along with my google analytics and quantcast code.

Yeah, my compete numbers are all over the board, but they're definitely always low. Advertisers will always use the metric that will give them the best rates… it only makes sense for them. But, you just have to stand firm. If they really want to d business with you, they'll be back.

I don't even bother with Compete.  If any advertiser mentions Compete, I point them to MozRank!

Awww yeah that could be it. If Compete only considers hits to the main page, that could explain the lower numbers.

Another place I usually point them is Sitemeter.com

I registered and added them only because a lot of these ranking system use them. I have never had an advertiser ask me about that.
