My wife and I have been discussing this a bit lately, since a good deal of my income is dependent on my sites now. Beating Broke, at some point in the past was the recipient of a penalty of some sort from Google. The result is that BB has no page rank. As we are all aware, PR is looked at pretty heavily by advertisers in regards to how much they'll pay for an ad on the site.
Has anyone ever successfully gotten Google to lift one of these penalties? If so, how?
I understand that it's nearly impossible to do so, but I would love, for obvious reasons, to get my PR back. The second part of the question, is, if I can't get the PR back, would I be better off starting over on a new domain and building from there, rather than spending the time on a site that will never have any PR?
Knowing how much time and effort I've put into Beating Broke, I lean towards saying F U Google, and keeping on with BB. But, as always, I find that the Yakezie advice is a bit more level headed. ;)

I had two domains. One had a penalty (PR0), so I did a 301 redirect to the other domain (PR3), and the PENALTY WAS TRANSFERRED! I went from a PR3 to a PR0. YIKES. I asked for reconsideration to little or no avail. Anyway, it took time, but I am now PR3 again, even after a 6.5 month hiatus and very few posts over the entire year. If you really want it back, it can happen. Good luck with whatever you decide.

The Big G isn't exactly known for being reasonable when they have made a decision. Personally, I would suggest a two-fold strategy… keep BB running. it is a nice site and you put a lot of work into it. If you don't know why you got penalized, perhaps the penalty will be lifted someday for an equally unknown reason. Meanwhile, start up a 2nd site. Perhaps the 2nd site can focus on survival after quitting your job, or some other niche-y idea? This solution will provide a win-win for you.

Selling links (which is what you are doing if the advertiser cares about PR) is only one very small piece of the pie when it comes to making money. From what I can see it looks like you have a large enough audience that you should be able to do well with more traditional advertising – CPM banners or AdSense – or via CPA or promoting products as an affiliate. This is doubly true if you have any level of traffic from the search engines.
Search engine traffic is worth its weight in gold if you can monetize it. I have sites with a PR of 0 that earn 4 figures per month.
All of this is to say that your site is likely worth far more than whatever you were making selling links based on your PR.

You're better at it than I am, Jeremy. The traffic I do get barely manages to get me $20-$30 a month on adsense, and I don't know that I've ever sold an affiliate product through the site. I'll have the time to get better at that part though, so it's a valid point.

I think with your newfound time, a new site may be something worth considering, but dont abandon BB. You've got a loyal audience there, and you shouldnt just toss that out- Your PR could come back, though who knows. as mentioned above, there's a lot of affiliate gigs available out there, but like you, i've never had success with any of them.

I agree with Jeff. It's time like these that I wish Google has more competition. I got banned from Adsense and that sucks. I'll have to try affiliates and see how that goes.

Joe – you got banned from Adsense? Wow, that happened to Khaleef too, and he mentioned that he didn't know how it even happened. He petitioned GA too, but to no avail (at least from the last I heard a long time ago). Do you have any ideas as to why you were banned?

I would suggest going with a CPM network for ad revenue. Perhaps Blog Ads or something of that nature. Don't drop BB.

Hey Roshawn, it's still true.
@ Shane, I think you should continue to focus your efforts on BB (unless you want to start another site about quitting your job and alternative income sources). As others have said, there are a lot of different advertising options out there, that don't depend on PR.

I know it's hard, but I think you need to try and figure out what it is that caused your PR to drop.
Without knowing why, how will you know a new site won't build up and drop later on as well?
And if you can pinpoint some areas to focus on you may be able to correct BB (or at least have a better blueprint for a new site).

This is a good idea. If you go to Google Forums and post a question, there are people who will take a quick look at your site to help you figure out why you may be penalized.

I'd go with the keeping of BB as your main blog – keep moving and then starting another site that is a bit different than the previous site maybe a niche site that has more content then normal? I would not abandon BB – too much of a following

That totally sucks. What was your PR before? I think some of the suggestions here are what I would do:
1. Try to find out through forums what has caused the PR drop. Correct if possible.
2. Continue on BB
3. Also start a second site to try to build PR
4. Look at other methods of earning
Good luck and let us know how we can help.
This is impetus to start my planned second site sooner rather than later.

I have so much trouble keeping up one site, the idea of two gives me cold chills… I think I need a drink…

I just love the idea of building up two (or maybe 3 or 4) sites at once and not having to wait around too long to have a decent online income. I know – im a little crazy and sleep a little less than I used to, but it's just so much fun! You don't have the same amount traffic or interaction to build it up. Just links to your site.
@BB, I say stick with it.. but I have no experience with getting a PR back after being penalized. Also, you might be able to start implementing affiliate sales, like others have commented. This is where passive money is at. I just started, but I have earned just over $25 in affiliates. :) wahoo! Every small amount helps, right?

Affiliate marketing doesn't work as well as Adsense. It works best if you're like Pat Flynn – a ton of direct, loyal traffic.

I'm currently writing a post on this topic – TCI was penalized for over 1 year. Now, I'm back at PR3.
Some things I did that may help you:
- Remove as many outbound links as possible, or ensure they are now follow (examples: CommentLuv, Recent Discussion)
- Ensure you don't have duplicate content floating around (Look for trackback spam and chase it down, and get DMCA to remove it)
- Watch your paid links – did this happen before or after you sold the links on the sidebar?
I would keep BB, but realize it will take time for Google to raise your PR back up. You can still make money though – maybe add an "Advertise" tab to make it easier for advertisers to contact you.
