Hello friends,

Sunday morning Mrs. SPF and I woke up to find our home was burglarized.  Our wallets (and every important piece of ID aside from passports), both of our computers, and my super-Canadian-proof jacket were stolen while we slept.

We're pretty shocked and kind of scared.  I am posting on my OLD laptop (which is so slow!).  It will be a stretch to keep up with our daily Sustainable Tips, let alone our 3 posts per week schedule so our time will not be devoted to networking.  We will try our best to respond to your comments on our articles, which we appreciate greatly.

Both Mrs. SPF and I are safe and sound, but we are shaken knowing someone was in our home while we slept.  We will need to get new computers in order to keep up with our blog and this fantastic community.

Anyhoo – if anyone needs to get in touch please contact us via email or our contact page on our site.

Regards,

Mr. & Mrs. SPF

Thanks Crystal.  I hope I sleep tonight (I didn't sleep a wink last night as I reacted to every creak and noise in our 100 yr old home).

Appreciate the support.  I need to go lie down now and hope I sleep tonight.

So sorry to here that.  We were broken into about 3 months ago during the day while we are away, and we are still uncomfortable being here.  It is still scary to think about.  I'm glad to here that both of you are okay.  Best wishes.

I am so sorry to hear this.  Many years ago I came home from work to find that our house had been broken into – it was a horrible feeling.   Not only were we missing stuff but we felt so violated.  I'm glad you're both okay – Try and get your rest.  Take it day by day.  Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

How horrible! You were right there when whoever was in the house was robbing you! I would be completely freaked out. Did you change the locks? Are you getting an alarm? A big dog? My God! I am glad you guys are okay. Things are replaceable, our lives – not.

Thanks everyone.

We do have a big dog – 105 lbs of dog.  Thing is, when she's asleep she is OUT.  I often walk by/over her when I got to bed and she doesn't stir.  So unless she happened to be awake during thei ncident she would have snored right through it all.  Even then, she's a Newfoundland Dog and is a bit protective but i'm not sure if she wouldn't just lick an intruder.

The crummy thing is that our personal identification (SIN #s – same as the US SSN) was contained in electronic tax files on my computer.  These numbers are a PAIN to change as they are kind of the core of our financial reality.  We password protect the laptops but ya never do know …

The guy also took my data key that was plugged into my laptop and on it all of the resources i'd found about blogging, and our financial spreadsheets (no acct numbers of passwords thankfully) and my mega list of article ideas is now gone.

I now have a cast iron pry bar stored beside my side of the bed.

Again, thanks for the support.

So sorry to hear what happened to you all SPF! That is wild that they broke in while you are were sleeping. I would have thought that kind of thing only happens when people are gone from their house.

Any idea how they got in?

Sorry to hear what happened..  serves as a good reminder regarding security f personal details on your laptop.

What does everyone do with all of your accounts/passwords/.etc…?   are they secure in the event that your laptop is stolen?

So scary!!! I can't believe they robbed you while you slept.

Since they took your ss#s, you may want to consider freezing your credit.  Then they can't open anything in your name.  Also, I would look  into a home alarm.  My mom was robbed 3 times in 2 years; then she got a security system and hasn't had any trouble since.

That is a major bummer.  Sorry to hear it.  Any advice to us on home saftey that you learned from this?

I recently put NSA level encryption on my laptop and have been moving all of my passwords to LastPass with 16 digit randomized passwords.  I think the computer is safe (thought I still need to encrypt the external hard drive).  I also have Prey installed on my phone and laptops for extra security.

I don't know what I would do if all of that information were stolen.  I really wish you the best in working through this.  On the (if any) bright side, it could lead to a great post on home and information security.  It seems that the problems in my life become the most popular posts.
