That is terrible!  Sign up for credit monitoring service and/or put a freeze on your credit inquiries.  I'm glad you guys are ok.  So sorry about what happened.  Let me know if you need any help at all.

Installing a security system might be a good idea.  It takes a long time for the feeling to go away.  I know.

That is a major bummer.  Sorry to hear it.  Any advice to us on home saftey that you learned from this?

I recently put NSA level encryption on my laptop and have been moving all of my passwords to LastPass with 16 digit randomized passwords.  I think the computer is safe (thought I still need to encrypt the external hard drive).  I also have Prey installed on my phone and laptops for extra security.

I don't know what I would do if all of that information were stolen.  I really wish you the best in working through this.  On the (if any) bright side, it could lead to a great post on home and information security.  It seems that the problems in my life become the most popular posts.

I'm really sorry to hear this happened, Sustainable. I have also recently started encrypting some of my files with TrueCrypt and I use KeePass to manage passwords (the downside of KeePass is that it's not an online solution (and I wouldn't trust an online solution) so if I'm elsewhere I can't login to most sites…).

NarrowBridge has a good point in that there may be a silver lining to all of this. Really hope you can get through this and resolve all of the problems, you've been doing really great in the challenge up till now.

@ Eric – thanks for the tips on the security measures.  I had primarily focused on our network security thinking if people can't get into the network our PCs were OK.  Never thought of theft before.

We will be putting deadbolt doors in, in the spring time.  Top priority.  We might also train our dog to wake up when people come in and out of the house.  She is protective against strangers if we don't greet them warmly (door-to-door people look like they're gonna pee when our 105lb Newf is growling at them).

I REALLY wanted to put up a security tip for our daily Sustainability Tip but Mrs. SPF didn't want me to.  I'll respect her wishes on this one.

We may consider the alarm as well, but I loathe more monthly bills ….

I'm so sorry to hear that.  I've been robbed before and know what a sense of violation results.  We weren't even home.  It's been many years, but the memory is still there.

You get door alarms that are inexpensive.  They'd go off if you don't enter a key when you open a door.  Costs $15 I think.  They might help.

I don't have much to add, but I did see NarrowBridge mention LastPass. Just wanted to mention that I use it too and it's a great piece of software. While it is hosted online, it's legitimately safe and no on can steal your data. Well, they could, but they'd need supercomputers and hundreds/thousands of years to crack your passwords. The tech podcast TWiT has an episode where they explain how it works, and while you have to understand cryptography a bit, LastPass has really done a great job. Especially for a free product!

I'm really sad to hear about this hardship your family is going through :( I really hope you are able to recover well from this, learn some positive lessons, and get back on track. Do you happen to know how the intruders were able to enter the house so easily without waking anybody up? Were they able to pick the locks?

One thing you mentioned is that you lost all of your blog post ideas and research. One solution I might suggest for that is to use something like Evernote to make notes about potential blog posts, outlines, and ideas. That way it is synced with their servers and you can easily access the information from everywhere either through their website or by installing the Evernote app on any computer you happen to be using. They also have apps for Android, iPhone, windows mobile, etc.

Another option is Google Notebook. This project was officially shut down by Google, but it is still useable for me on both my personal gmail account and my Google Apps account (which I thought I started after they shut it down). You may want to check out google.com/notebook to see if you can use it or not. It's wonderful for organizing and taking notes. I actually prefer it to Evernote but am trying to migrate to Evernote because they have new development and support a lot of devices, not just the browser. They have no plans to turn off the servers and are allowing existing users to use the service indefinitely.

I've been looking into LastPass as well recently and thinking about encrypting files on my computers in case one of them was stolen. Thanks for the recommendations in this thread about what to use to encrypt files, I may look into those.

One final suggestion I have for you would be to synchronize your files that you can't use a service like Evernote for either with an external hard drive or an online drive (USB keys are just too easy to lose). I use SyncToy (a free program by Microsoft) to sync files onto my external hard drives and other computers. I've also heard good things about DropBox, although I've never used it. I think microsoft also has Windows Live Skydrive too. Lots of options. Wikipedia is usually good about making lists of similar software and comparing them so you can choose what works for you.

I'm so sorry. That's terrible and very scary! Were you able to tell how they entered? It's also crazy that your dog slept through the whole thing. Is there any possibility it could be a neighbor or someone your dog would know? That's so frightening.

I'm glad you are both safe, though. Hopefully you'll be able to make a claim on your insurance and they will act quick so you can get on with everything.

A happy announcement.

We got a call from our police department today.

They caught the jerk who broke into our house!

Not only that, he was sitting on a TON of stolen stuff!

We expect to get my laptop and Mrs. SPF's netbook back.  Our wallets were even found.

Not sure about the jacket, camera, data key, cordless mouse, cash (obviously gone) and Christmas gift cards … but we'll see!

Good news!

Great news, considering the circumstances. My house was robbed once back when I was in middle school. The police caught the idiots, but I think all they got was a slap on the wrist. :(.
