In general the ones the posts that do well with adsense monetization are the ones that do well in the search engines.  Regular readers don't usually click on ads, so it can be a good idea to try and monetize in other ways for your regular readers – like your own products, affiliates, etc.

The most clicks that I get are from articles with very focused topics that pull search engine traffic.  Chances are that the ads that are displayed will closely be associated with what they were searching for (especially with Google's search tracking cookies) which might insight people to click on those ads.  There is both a good and bad here.  The good is that you will generate income, but the bad is that you will be losing a reader off to another site.  I write content sometimes for my most popular search terms and they generate the most revenue.  I've said if before and will say again, everyone should install Adsense Optimizer plugin.  It is light years ahead of others and increased my revenue from under $0.50 to $30 in the first month alone.

Sandy–where do I find the Adsense Optimizer plugin?  I searched for that term and couldn't find it.

Also, how does one go about seeing what are the popular terms for AdSense?  I don't want to write for AdSense, but once in awhile I wouldn't mind tailoring a post around a keyword.  I just don't know how to find the keywords!Surprised

Here is the link for the plugin if it doesn't load with the WordPress search.  I'm not sure if it's restricted to just Wordpress but it looks like it. And i show one ad up top and one in the middle of my posts then I have a banner ad on the top of the blog.

If you have Google Analytics in the same account as your Google Adsense it will show you how much money you are making on Adsense from different traffic sources.  Unfortunately, this feature hasn't worked correctly in my account for quite a while but others may have better luck.

ads are a great way to start, but something to consider is opportunity cost. as you monetize further through affiliates, your own products, etc, you might want to reconsider ads. do you want to make 10 cents on a click and lose the visitor who may have potentially bought an affiliate product that could have made you $10?  only you can answer given your situation/stats.

for me, affiliates have worked great. private ad inquiries are now starting to trickle in.  hopefully soon there will be digital products in the mix as well.  donations? not for my blog i don't think…though my niche content sites do very well with donations
