Money Doesn’t Come Overnight

Hey!

How is it going today? I’m doing terrific! After
several days off over the Holidays and 1 week off in a vacation property we
rented in January (paid by the company off course!), I’m fully back in business
and it shows!

First off, I got a lot of attention last week on
one of my latest post on Dividend Guy Blog: What
Happened in the Dividend World in 2010 and What is Coming in 2011
. The
article was picked up by Seeking Alpha;
an investing article aggregator. What is good by getting mentions is that
usually people who click to see your article are very likely to click on your Adsense
or on your RSS feed. In both cases, you are a winner ;-D.

I’ve been providing some insights for the past
couple months but I forgot to start with the most important article: this
one!

I was discussing with one of my friend, Evan at My Journey to Millions and I was
asking him if he likes what he is reading on my newsletter. He said he loves
the new content but that I should tell people not to expect making money
overnight
. I totally agreed with him as I saw that some new bloggers with
less than 20 posts on their blog already start to monetize (or should I write
try to monetize) their blog. Well my friends, if you are a new blogger, this
article is for you!

Blogging doesn’t rhyme with money, it rhymes with passion
and faith!

I’ll start about talking about faith. When I first
started my main blog; The Financial Blogger, I didn’t know much about blogging.
In fact, today’s new bloggers know 100 times what I knew back then. Just to
show you how bad I was, I’m going to share something very personal; my first
year of Google Analytics Stats:

If I had the full first year, results would have
been even worst! In fact, I have started The Financial Blogger back in November
2006 and added analytics in April 2007. Within 9 months worth of stats, I
barely made half of the visits I currently get in a month. This takes a lot of
faith to keep writing each day! Thanks to my partner who told me not to quit!

But let’s take a look at my first 2 months. I’ll
show you when I realized I could build traffic:

On May 22nd 2008, I was mentioned by another website (Canadian
Capitalist). This was my first spike of traffic ever. Since then, I realized
how it is important to get the attention from the big guys ;-).

It is obvious that you can reach a much higher
level of traffic within a shorter period of time. While blogging competition
has seriously increased over the past 5 years, information on improving your
search engine ranking and how to get more traffic is definitely more liberal. However,
it doesn’t meant that it doesn’t require a lot of work.

Blogging doesn’t rhyme with money, still don’t
believe me?

All right, I told you that The Financial Blogger is
becoming an open door to my online business; here’s another proof. Here’s my
2008 income tracking:

MAR    $50

APR      $701

MAY     $458

JUN      $672

JUL       $607

AUG     $746

SEP      $524

OCT     $2,414

NOV     $1,375

DEC     $1,912

You read right; not 2006, not 2007, this is my
2008 income tracking
. This means that income was so minimal before March
2008 (the month we founded our incorporation) that I didn’t even tracked it! So
if you think you can make money overnight with your blog; think again!

As I have mentioned before, you can be much
faster than me
on both traffic and income. However, when I post that I made
$7,600 in January
, it definitely didn’t happen overnight! You can make
a lot of money online, but it requires following:

#1 Working hard

#2 Working hard with passion and faith

If you don’t have those 2 prime requisites, just
forget about making money with your blog and concentrate on having fun ;-).

Stay tuned as for next week, on The Financial
Blogger website, I’ll start posting about my new adventure; making niche
websites! If you don’t want to miss it, I’d suggest you register to my full RSS feed
if it’s not done already!

I was considering developing some of the niche site URLs that I own. I look forward to your posts.

I really appreciate you sharing all of these financial details and stats about your blog. It really helps us new bloggers know what to expect and having something real to compare against.

I know it's part of your overall strategy to make even more money every month … but it's definitely helpful to us at the same time. Thanks!

afterall, you don't have to pay for this info either ;-D

TFB,

Amazing stats and thanks for being so open.  You mention working hard.  Now that your empire is a finely tuned machine, do you find yourself working harder or not as hard as before?  Just wondering if you are slowly easing off the pedal or even hungrier for more.

Look forward to future posts. Smile

Very good tips! I started my blog in January 2010 and didn't make more than $50 until December 2010.

Hey Buck,

I don't work harder than before. I would says that I work about the same level of hours. What has changed is that I know work 4 days a week at my day job so I can work 1 full day on my blogs (which equals more work toward my company, but now more work in my workweek ;-) ). That decision made a huge difference for me back in 2009.

Hello! Great stuff. Is that your income from adsense, or a combo of adsense and other ad selling?

Also, I work a 4 day compressed schedule as well, which is perfect for blogging–I have all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for my business.

Add me to the list of 4 day a weekers, too.

I swear its the way to go.  I cram 19 hours of school in the first four days, and I have Fridays and all weekend get my "work-work" done.  Good stuff. :)

5 hours per day is cramming? ;) Rough go of it hehe (for those of us who work 8+ hrs daily!)

19 hours in class plus homework.  A rule of thumb is that A grades require 1-2 hours of outside study per 1 hour in class.  That's 38-57 hours right there, per week.  I deal with a business in the hours in between and spend probably 30hrs/week on that, but do most of my work on the weekends.

I'd love to spend 8+ hours a day working.  As it stands, I spend a bare minimum of 75 hours in study/school/transit to school/business before I even get around to my fun blog, MoneyMamba.  And I haven't even yet accounted for sleep, showers, or the time it takes just to find something to eat. Ya, haha … when I was in school it was 3 hours + of homework for every hour spent in class. Sounds like you have a hectic schedule JT … hope you aren't going to burn yourself out.

Good post. It takes awhile to effectively monetize your blog. It is definitely not an overnight process.
