Hey all,
I just got assigned my very first Alexa rank on Financial Ramblings and I thought I'd post it here for posterity. This is a brand new site, launched eight days ago, and my rank is currently…
Wait for it…
11,743,192
So I only need to drop by 11,543,192 slots. Any bets on when I'll get there?
I'll update periodically as I make my way down toward respectability.
Thanks, michael

My guess is about 2 months. Over the first couple weeks, you will have a meteoric decent. Under 1 million by October.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Just keep up with consistent postings and you'll automatically get most of the way there without having to exert much effort over that. I'd also recommend learning SEO and posting about what readers will like to see, not only what you feel like writing. The more "rankable" posts you have (on topics people are searching for), the more important your site will become.

Yeah seriously – your ranking will PLUMMET. Mine was originally over 11,000,000 and dropped below 3,000,000 in just over a week. It's the Yakezie Magic!

Day #2 with a ranking and I've dropped to 4,463,288. That's an improvement of 7,279,904 slots…
Another day like this and I'll be at -2,816,616 tomorrow. :-)
I'm kidding, of course. Regardless, I'm sure there's a very long (and flat) tail with things like Alexa rankings so it's very easy to move up early on. That is, the difference between 10 million and 5 million in terms of raw Alexa visitor #s (which is really what we're measuring here; it's not necessarily well correlated with raw traffic) can't be that great.

Let us know when you rank in the negatives! I want to be able to say "I knew him when his Alexa rank was in the +8 figures range!"
Alexa numbers get even more screwy when you dive into details. At one point, Alexa told me that I was ranked something like 700 in Barbados. When I finally looked at my Google Analytics and drilled down by country, I discovered that I only had 3 visitors from there!

Congrats, Michael! I'm still waiting for my Alexa ranking to come through. Hoping to see drastic change in number like that. Psyched! Keep up the good work.

Day #3, ranking is unchanged from Day #2.
Don't worry, I don't plan on doing daily updates forever. Just trying to get a feel for the "pulse" of Alexa and I thought others might be interested. Will probably update this thread (when I think of it) for a little while, though.

Edit to add: Actually, it did update later in the day. Now at 3,024,367… Another day, another 1.4 million improvement.

Mine has seemed to fluctuate a bit in the first few days. From day 1 to day 2 it actually went up by 1 million, then came down to roughly 70k less than it was on day 1. Now it's a few thousand up from there. I have a feeling I might get a little obsessed with checking my rank every day. :)

Haha like all blogging stats, I've found it's so easy to become obsessed. I created an Evernote page for myself and although I'll look at my Alexa rank every day, I only really pay attention once a week and I'll just log the number, improvement over the last week, and then chart it.

When I was in the challenge, I would check my rank first thing each morning. Last night was the first time I thought to even look at my rank since I filled out the membership a few weeks ago. I was actually pretty surprised to see how far out had fallen while I wasn't paying attention.

The rankings seem incredibly dynamic. Just for fun I checked the current rankings of several of the member sites and most of them are way off from their listed ranking on the members page. It's a real reminder that even once you've established a great blog, blogging is never "passive" income. It requires a lot of ongoing work and dedication.

You've got a very good point. There's exactly 200,000 spots to fill, and plenty of people pushing to fill those spots.

Yeah, I'm mostly tracking this to see where the free fall stops and the real work begins.
Day #4: 2,583,750 — improved by roughly 0.5 million.

I say 6 months or so as long as you have good regular content and network, network, network.

I'm becoming fascinated with Alexa rankings. I was just on the website of one of the top law firms in the world, and their Alexa ranking is in the 100k's – significantly higher than Yakezie and many of its members! It's a little daunting to think that my goal is to get my blog to the same status as the website of a top global law firm.

After consistently blogging for two months, I'm just now striking that balance between networking/promoting others and trying to find time to work on my own stuff. The goodwill here is reciprocated by many fantastic folks. Good luck with your blogging journey and I will look forward to those updates.
p.s. I just peeked in on your site and will continue to do so. Looking very informative!
