Hello Yakezie-ites,

I have been offered to write a post and they said they would actually pay me to do it. My first offer ever. Gotta say I'm excited. Although I do have my doubts. I was hoping I could get some opinions from those of you who have more experience with freelancing.

They have offered to pay me $15 per 1000-1500 words. It takes me about 2 hours or so to write something that long. This seems like so little money for 2 hours work…but I would be getting paid. Is it worth it since I am just starting out or would you negotiate?

FYI: I have already written two posts for free on their website to help get our blog's name out there.

Thanks for your input and advice!

Brandy

Hi Brandy,

Getting started with freelance writing is tough. In the beginning, I wouldn't worry too much about price, especially if the website is reputable and can be pointed to for reference for that next gig. I freelance here and there and I have gotten to the point of expecting at least $40 for a 1,600 word post. As I become even more established, I expect this rate will rise to higher still.

Best of luck to you and your freelancing!

Hi Brandy, first of all congratulations on your first offer! I still remember getting mine a year or so ago–it was $10 an article and it took me anywhere between 1-2 hours to write. Fortunately, I'm averaging much more now, and over time you'll know a little more about what you should expect (and that should increase over time). All in all, if you feel it's a good use of your time, go for it. And remember it's not only about the money. Sometimes you have to do a little pro bono or near pro bono stuff to get your name out there.
