Many of us bloggers like to boost our subscriber and Facebook numbers by hosting a giveaway of some sort. I've had quite a few, and they've definitely helped, but I'm starting to ask myself, "What's the most effective way to do this?"

  • What are some sites that would help me advertise (for free) my giveaway? I know there are some giveaway sites, but what are the best ones?
  • What is the best item to giveaway? Walmart gift card? Kindle? Amazon gift card? Books? All of the above?
  • How long should the giveaway last? 1 week? 2 weeks?

Hi, Derek.  In my experience, a good time to run a giveaway is about 10 days to 2 weeks.  I list my giveaway up daily at the blogs listed in this site:

I also advertise at Online-Sweepstakes.com

If you don't have 200 entries and there is less than a week left for the giveaway, this is a great source to advertise low entry giveaways:

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I would say a gift card or paypal cash prize, unless you can spring for something big like a tablet. I also publish my giveaway on a few sites to get extra exposure, although people are coming more for the prize and may leave after the giveaway if over. You could have a PF oriented prize like a book or a software. As per who helps you I don't know about companies but sometimes bloggers pool money together to get a bigger prize and each one gets a social account to promote.

Anyone have any specifics on how effective this has been for them and their site?

We've been thinking about doing this for a while, but just aren't sure the most effective way to do it, or if its valuable enough.

Thanks for the thoughts and resources so far… very helpful.
