For the past couple days I have been getting about 50-100 spam comments a day. These comments are stupid one-liners, and all of them use the same three URLS… Bing, Yahoo, and Google…just their homepages. Who are these people and what purpose would they have for leaving those 3 homepages in my comments? Usually its a personal or promotional site as most of us know…this was something I had never seen before. Last night I got 100 while I was sleeping.

That's so frustrating! I installed a program that Beating Broke recommended (can't remember the name now), and my spam comments have dropped dramatically from hundreds (literally!) a day to just a handful.

The comments might be to test and see if you leave them. Then they come back and leave ones with links?
Some spam/comment plugins require a certain amount of comments before they are dofollowed also.

Money is the root, I think FFB is right. Usually it will be something like "great post" or "I am not sure I agree with you"… They have a harmless url to make you think they don't have any promotional sites. Once you approve a couple of them you will get loads of them with viagra or a payday loan urls. I have seen a lot of them with same ip address, may be you could block the ip?

Thanks everyone! I'm used to the spam comments, but these were quite abundant and leaving the same 3 URLS everytime. Oh well, hopefully it dies down today!

I've been getting quite a few (for me) lately too – blackhawks jerseys, payday loans and one other thing. They leave about 6 comments at a time, on my more popular posts. I've been using conditional capcha for a while, and it was working great until recently.

I had captcha at one point… a lot of people said that it would annoy readers when they comment, but it stopped being effective regardless. I just downloaded Growmap Anti-Spam plugin, it's a checkbox, so less to do than captcha, and it seems to be more effective already!

Thanks for giving me the name of the plugin. I'm trying it out on one my new blogs that's been getting some spam. I don't like Askimet since it thinks I'm a spammer.
