Hey guys,

For those of you who do allow advertorial posts on your site, do you usually mark the advertisers links as do-follow or no-follow? Also, do you cloak these links with a system like PrettyLinks? I just discovered Pretty Links (thanks Average Joe) and never really thought of cloaking or no-following Ad links before. I guess the same would hold true for sidebar links. Any ideas or thoughts you'd like to share would be awesome.

Thanks!

Advertiser links should be No-Follow.  I use pretty links to make the links pretty!  I don't try to conceal that they are affiliate links.  For example, my Mint affiliate link would look like this: http://kshkjhsadfds.co m/asldfksdlkfs, but that looks terrible and scary to a new reader.  Instead, I use pretty links to make it http://thecollegeinvestor.com/gomint.

I can understand no-following and 'prettying' an affiliate product, but do advertisers pay for nofollow links? What is the benefit to them then? Can someone clarify?

If you try to do a pretty link or no-follow a paying advertiser (not an affiliate) you are going to be met with resistance at best and anger at worst.  For sites with less than 20K page views a month advertisers are not paying you because of your readers. They are paying you so that it looks to google like you are endorsing their site…so the moment you mess up that link they are going to respond (as they should).

Feel free to email me if you want more details than that

That's exactly what Google is battling against when they say that you're not allowed to sell links, so be careful. If the advertiser is truly interested in display advertising, the form of the link shouldn't matter.

If the advertiser objects, then what they're really trying to do is buy Google juice — which is fine as long as you're aware that Google frowns on this. You're probably fine if it an actual graphic ad, but if it's a box filled with text but styled to look like a display ad, then you may be tempting fate.

Just want to give a thanks to those who mentioned the PrettyLinks. This rookie blogger over here had no idea there was something that masked those affiliate links! I thought you had to do it by code. Glad to have figured out an easier solution! Thank goodness for plugins.

I've found the same thing with advertisers.  I dodge the whole google/ethical dilemma by making sure I only accept advertisers that I actually do believe in or endorse.  That way making them follow links isn't such a big deal.  And I can maintain reader trust.

I just learned about these courtesy of Average Joe over at The Free Financial Planner. I really like the plugin now that I'm aware of what it is and does.

Thank you guys for all of the responses. Being a newbie at all of this, your answers have been really insightful and helpful to me. You guys rock!
