Howdy Yakezie!
I was curious how everyone is doing being notified of being included in carnivals these days.
Are the trackbacks coming through pretty well?
For me, ever since the carnival hosts stopped needing to log in to a central email address to access the submissions, I haven't been receiving the email notifications when my posts get included like I used to. Since I'm not on Wordpress, I don't receive the trackbacks either, and Google Alerts don't seem to be very reliable, even though I have them set up.
Just curious what everyone else's experiences are these days and if you're using some other tool to be notified when your site is mentioned online.
Thanks!
Jacob

To be honest, I do rely on pings to discover when somebody has linked to me, whether carnival or organic. But I have found that Carnival of Personal Finance hosts usually send out a mass email to everybody who is in it to let them know.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I'm with Edward, I usually rely on pingbacks while checking for spam. Although, I don't get emails when the carnival goes live, I keep the emails and check the site that it's supposed to be published on for a few days and then figure that it's a no go if it's been a week.

Yeah I get the Carnival of Personal Finance ones as well. Right now, it's one of the few carnivals whose submissions still are run from a central email address that is accessed vs having an html template sent out through bloggercarnivals.com

For anyone who hosts a carnival – It's in your best interest to email everyone that is included!

I agree! With the new html submission format though, the hosts don't get to see the email addresses of the bloggers who submit.

I am not convinced I receive all ping backs; the reasons I know I don't is that sometimes I come across a monetion that I have not received. Carinival inclusion notifications sometimes come much later – sometimes months. And I know that people don't receive my pings though all is enabled.
Have no idea how to sort it out.

I do tend to rely on the pingbacks, though I will keep my email receipt of submission to check back on. I do try and send out emails when I host, assuming it was not sent to me via html. That said, even when I send an email out I find that half (at best) of those who were included will link back.

I usually just rely on pingbacks, since most hosts don't get the emails of those who submitted. I don't know if all the pingbacks are coming through, but I can tell you that most of the time I don't get Google alerts when I'm mentioned even when I do get a pingback. I used to get alerts for everything.

I am hosting CoPF this week and its a big task to mass email, I need to collate all the emails, a tough task for lazy Sunday afternoon, huh!
Carnival admins should automate these tasks.

I keep a log of the carnivals I submit to, then once a week I Google the name of the carnival and filter on anything indexed in the last week. I'll usually find the carnival and can then go see if I was included.

Blogger Carnivals also lists the hosts. Just click on it to see if your post is included. That's why I usually only use Blogger Carnivals to submit.

I was actually just about to ask this, but with regards to backlinks in general. I'm still on blogger (I know, I need to switch), and I'd like to be able to figure out when someone has linked to one of my posts. My traffic is small enough right now that I can pretty much just notice when I'm getting traffic from a certain site, but is there a better way to follow this? I see that people are mentioning pingbacks above. Sorry for the newbie question, but what exactly does that mean and how would I use it?

I have the trackbacks feature turned off on my blog, as it does not give any value to the readers. I look for an email from the host to know I should link back and share.

So I sent an email to the owner of bloggercarnivals.com, and this is on his radar of things to include in the future when he has time. Good news!

I'm on my 4th year of using Blogger, so I know your pain! I have Google Alerts set up for when my name, my blog's name, or my blog's url is mentioned online, but it only works when older sites (4-5 years old or more) link to, not for blog carnivals etc.
You can get some sort of idea by seeing your traffic sources on Google Analytics from referring sites. That helps me a lot of the time too!

In Google Analytics > Traffic Sources >Social > Trackbacks
Couldn't say if it catches everything but it's been helpful.
