I have been getting a crazy amount of SPAM comments in the past week and I have no idea why all of a sudden.  I was getting a couple a week before, now Im getting about 20 a day!  It's getting annoying seeing them all the time.  Im getting a lot from "buy tramadol" and "pills natural" and "five finger shoes"… they seem to be sending about 5 at a time.

Have any of you experienced this at all?

Do you have a solution for how to taper it off a little?

I have captcha for my comments, but it doesnt seem to be helping enough.

The check box for comment plugin is superb.  I just started using it after SPF's recommendation and couldn't be happier.

I use IntenseDebate as my commenting system, and it has a spam blocker built in. I bet there is some kind of application built in to the Wordpress commenting system that you can use!

I use akismet and conditionl CAPTCHA.  This has taken care of all my spam comments.

GASP owns, period.  I will never make my readers suffer with word/number captcha.

This is the combo I use too.  It gives real bloggers a chance for Akismet not to eat them accidentally and the spammers fail.  I love it!

Have you checked out GASP on our site Crystal?  While it's cool you don't comment on our site you should really check it out.  It gives the user a check box, placed above or below the submit button that they can QUICKLY click to prove they are human (and you can customize the text instruction any way you want) instead of forcing the commentor to try to figure out the hard to read word in captcha, or think about which numbers to input or to do math.  It is SO much easier than the other captchas and works just as well.

I've swayed some bloggers i'm shocked changed their ways: JT here but also Mike @ MoneySmartsBlog (big CDN PF blogger) and some others.  The check box is idiot proof whereas when I mess up a captcha, lately, I don't bother to try again and the blog loses a comment.

Conditional Captcha isn't a normal Captcha.  It's a very easy to read set of letters and numbers that asks the commenter to type in something like the 1st and 3rd character.  It also ONLY is presented to people who Akismet marks as spam, so 90% of my commenters never have to do ANYTHING to comment.  :-)

I don't mind GASP, but it is annoying to me to check a box every, single time.  I hate regular Captcha.  A couple of the blogs I normally comment on have regular captcha and if it eats my comment even once, I won't comment for weeks…it's just annoying – especially since my comments are so long usually.

I've been using WP-Spamfree which seems to block a lot of comments.

It also will tell you where a comment is from in your email notification and it gives you an option to blacklist their IP.

I use Spam Karma 2 and it's been great. It says it's not being updated, but I haven't had any problems with it.

@Crystal After i'm done with my comment and I move to using the mouse, I find it much easier to click a check box than to have to go back to the keyboard to enter more data.  I much prefer a single click every time than to have to enter 2 numbers every single time.

SPF, just to clarify, I don't think it is single click every single time vs 2 numbers every single time. It more like enter 2 numbers occasionally and most likely just once. I occasionally comment on Crystal's blog and I had to enter the numbers only once, I think it was the first time. After that I never had to enter anything so far.

I am not a frequent commenter (this is one area I have to totally improve on, I just read all the blogs but don't comment, I don't have enough confidence to comment. I have change that.) But from my little commenting, I feel something, a click or numbers (as long as I can read) is better than Akismet eating my comment without telling me anything.

@Suba – some sites I visit make me enter the 2 numbers every time (drives me nuts) – do you know why that would be?  I also used to use conditional captcha but it was always letters – I never did find the numbers one.

I use the combo that people are mentioning but I think there is a secondary issue – If you are getting spammed a lot then that means you are getting noticed and/or getting picked up for certain keywords.

That means Akismet has you marked as spam on those sites.  Am I one of them?  If so, I can ask Akismet to mark you properly.

More SPAM means you are doing a good job and getting more attention. Consider it an annoying complement.

I use Akismet and conditional captcha as well. If you have to enter the numbers, it is because Akismet has classified you as spam. Conditional Captcha is really there to give the person leaving a comment a chance to tell Akismet that it's wrong.

I don't mind either system…but I do have having to enter a captcha code every time!
