I really have no clue what goes into these rankings anymore… I didnt much before, but have even less of an idea now.
My blog Crohnic Illness, while it has zero ads on it, it only has maybe 10 backlinks, 10 posts, 4 months old, and its a PR4… meanwhile I have another site that is a PR1 with 200 posts on it and 1000's of backlinks lol. Go figure.
I see more and more sites around that are kind of "company" sites that have a PR4. These sites just focus on what that company is doing, get very little traffic, have no adsense or other ads, only link to some partners and are the web interface for that company or organization. They probably only rank for a few very specific keywords. They do not do any link building. My guess is that the PR 4 reflects the authority of that site for that particular niche.
I think it is difficult to create such a site with the idea to monetize it with ads.
I do agree with you…I have noticed the same thing with those types of sites. Though Crohnic Illness is just my therapeutic outlet for Crohns Disease…I wish it would get more traffic than it does, but im lucky to get 5 visitors a day.

I knew about Alexa rankings, but never knew of this PR thing (I had to look it up to figure out what you guys were even talking about! — mine is 1 by the way, no covering the fact that I'm still a newbie! :-)). Any thoughts on which rankings are more meaningful? Or is it like credit scores where all 3 are meaningful sort of, you just take them all together to give you an idea of how you're doing?

Thanks for the update.
PR stayed @ 3, which is totally cool with me.
Traffic is up like crazy in the past 4 months, Alexa lower, PA & DA are much better.
Overall I'm happy.

Having thought 'bolocks to it' I am getting myself increasingly worked up – to a degree where I am tempted to give all this blogging stuff up.
Can some one tell me what can be done to inrease one's PR?

It's really not worth getting worked up over, and certainly not worth quitting over! PR has very little significance to most overall online business strategies. You can have high PR and low traffic, and vice versa. You are far better concentrating on quality content, and gaining the approval of real life humans, rather than an automated tool bar. It's the people that will ultimately either make or break you! Now smile and kick Googles' butt!

I could really care less anymore but I'm down to 2 now. I'm guessing it's because I haven't had time to write much new material since Feb. I've been focusing on studying lately. But traffic is up and my adsense has jumped so like I said, I could care less.
Interestingly enough, a new site that I have very few backlinks to is now PR 1. None of my other sites moved.

Yes, I rather have more traffic and Adsense revenue than a higher PR. The problem I see now after the last Google updates is that "Google gives it; Google takes it". Blog revenue models that are based on either Google Adsense (or other click ads) or PR are fickle since you never know when Google takes away whatever you've build up.

Woohoo, moved up to a PR2 (from 1)! But our mozRank actually declined veeeery slightly. Never looked at DA and PA before so I'm not sure if they've moved or how to assess them. Thanks for the heads up!

Still a 3, but my 'prediction' is now a 4 on that Website Analyzer site. Thanks for claiming I got ripped off Website Analyzer, haha!

We jumped up to a PR3, which is great!
I am pretty pumped about it :)
Many thanks to all of our friends here who have helped us get there.

Congratulation to everyone who got improved PR!
Unfortunately we got docked again and dropped to PR2. My SE traffic is still doing very well, but I'm just really afraid that Google will kill my SE traffic at some point.
