I've been following this article which cautions very strongly against "do follow" paid advertiser links and explains the rational for Googles displeasure with these links.

 

What are your thoughts?

Selling text links is a bad idea and has been for a long time. It's probably been five or so years since Google first made a point of saying that selling dofollow text links was against their TOS and started doling out PageRank penalties (if not actual traffic penalties) to sites with suspicious links. If you're in it for the long haul, don't do it.
