So this weekend/week has been a bit of a mess with my site. It seems that my webhost lost a server and all of my sites on that host went offline for 4 days. Needless to say that it has been a nightmare to get everything back up since not all all hosts backup up your files regularly.

I know we have talked about a few different plugins that do this, but please use this as a reminder to not forget the little things – like I did.

I haven't been regularly backing up my site on my computer. I have a db plugin that backs it up on my webhost's server. Do I need to regularly backup onto my cpu?

Yes.

I don't even rely on plugins.  I go to cpanel and do the back up myself.  Then I copy the file to my PC.

Always a good idea. I use a plugin for my database, but don't backup my other files nearly enough. Thanks for the reminder.

I use a plugin that emails me a copy of my site's database twice a day. Is there something else I should be backing up?

Stupid question, but SPF can you explain in detail how you do this?  I use a plugin, but it hasn't been e-mailing the back up to me nightly as it is supposed to do.

Marissa, that is really unfortunate, and I'm sorry to hear this. But your right, a lot of hosts don't do daily backups, and its not easy to get things backed up sometimes.

Sustainable PF is right, there is no gaurantee that a plugin will do a proper backup for you, and I haven't had much luck with plugins either. Going into your Cpanel (if that is the host platform) is the best way to backup. If I'm not mistaken it can even be scheduled and you can have regular backups emailed to you. Do not go into phpmyadmin unless you know what are you doing ;)

I am switching webhosts shortly as well- just have to get the whole mess sorted out first. But yeah, I know there is a way to download the backup thru cpanel. Laziness got in the way it seems.

I use the backupbuddy plugin.   It loads weekly database backups and monthly everything-but-the-kitchen-sink backups to Amazon.  Those backups come with a script to completely load the site on your server.    It's great for migrations and backups.

Through ftp you can backup the public_html folder and everything in it as well.  I do this every time I make a site change or once a month which ever happens first.  I usually keep 3 backups (one for each month) just in case something is messed up I can go back 3 months.  I do this on top of the regular database backup.

Could not agree more on all of this… We've been using plugins for most of our db backups but it's never quite as good as the "entire" database that you can get in cpanel (or elsewhere depending on your hosting setup).. slowly getting organized to do this on a regular basis.

I will have to do some homework in the cPanel backup.  I back up my database once a week.  Don't recall the plugin but I can either choose to have it email or just download it right then, which I do.

Another way to manually backing up is.. FTP on to your site (i use filezilla) and copy entire webroot. I keep one on my laptop and another one in the external hard drive. Any one need a help with filezilla or ftp, email me.

Just because you copy all of your files from the FTP server doesn't mean you got your database too. You need to have copies of both.

Thanks for the reminder. I just backed up the whole thing via cpanel. Backing up via Amazon sounds like a good plan too.

Thanks for the reminder. I typically use a plugin for the db but often forget about all the other files.

I'm using WP-DBManager for daily database backups.  I've also set up a Google Calendar message once a month for cpanel backups.  With that I also make sure to back up my Thesis settings.

And at my new host I pay a little extra to keep the last 5 days backed up.

One day I'll be brave enough to learn about out a CRON job for backups.
