I had a plugin that I used on my last blog, but I can't seem to find it now. Does anyone know the name of the plugin that sends an e-mail to someone after they comment on your site for the first time?

Can't help you with a plugin name.
I am curious: Does that plugin help convert or bring folks back to the site? The success rate of such a plugin would be cool to know.

Want some honest feedback from a reader? I find the auto-respond emails annoying and I delete them. If they are done well, as Pat Flynn does, I could see the conversion rate being respectable. Just my 2 cents worth..

I agree, they don't do much for me but that's just personal opinion. I'm going to either read or not read based on content, not on getting an auto-generated e-mail.

I find them annoying and just delete them from a readers perspective. I think that if it converts even one to a regular, i would say it is a success just to have installed.

Yah, I think everyone is in agreement here, it's not worth the effort. People get annoyed with followup emails…
Your much better off using a "subscribe to comments" plugin for those who want to follow a post.
Cheers

The plugin What Would Seth Godin Do? if I recall, also sends an intro note to new visitors on your site.

I use that plugin… it just posts a little highlighted box at the top of the page that indicates you may be a new user and encourages you to sign up as an email subscriber…you can customize the message. Based on my non-giveaway subscribers, I would say it's minimally effective…or my blog is minimally effective…lol either or.

I've found that it is hard to know what works and what doesn't. I have the auto-reply email on 20's Finances after the first comment, but I only send out one email. I did my best to make it less spammy and I have received a couple of replies from it – granted – that's in about a 5 month window. :) I think it's all on your approach. If you are looking just for conversions, it probably won't perform that well… but if you want to send an extra reminder that you appreciate them for coming to your site (and not just saying, "Thanks for coming to X"), then why not. That's my $.02
BTW, it's called 'Thank Me Later'

Thanks!
I appreciate all of the responses and I am not trying to spam people with e-mails. It's a one-time e-mail to visitors that comment for the first time only. I just want to send a thank you mail and if that results in one or two regulars, I'm happy with that!

While getting that email won't deter me from reading the site the email is deleted without giving it a thought. Basically the email means I have to a) open it, b) read part of it, c) delete it. While I am used to these things some readers may actually get annoyed you made them spend time on an auto-form letter.

Try the comment redirect plugin. It will redirect new commenters to a page on your site where you can say thanks, ask to follow and anything else you want without ever sending an email.
