Hey guys,
I'm trying to promote my posts and I'm not really well versed in Digg and the other sites that promote posts. Can someone point me to an explanation of how Digg and other similar sites work? Thanks, I'd really appreciate it.

Kevin, I'm not that familiar either.
I found that reddit is really great at bringing in random traffic. When I was on vacation some members reddit my guest post and it became one of the most popular post so far. I reddit a few posts after that and sometime got a lot of traffic and sometime not.
I think it must have something to do with what time of the day you reddit the post.
It looks like the post shows up on reddit and then as new posts come in, it goes down…?
I want to learn more too.
I didn't get much traffic from dig or stumble upon. Only a few clicks.

Well, in a nutshell you submit your article to these sites and your followers are alerted. In addition, people browsing the digg for interesting stuff may also see it. If they like what they see then they vote you up, and the more up votes you get the higher up on the pages your article will appear. The higher up it appears, the more people see it and the more it could get upvoted. It's kind of a vicious cycle. I hope this answers your question, let me know if there is anything else I might be able to explain.
I love reddit because it is such an active community, but you never know what will do well and what won't, lol!

Good explanation. The hope is that your post makes the front page and is seen by millions of readers.

Thanks guys.
So there is Digg, Reddit, and StumbleUpon? Are there any more I should be trying? Does everyone agree Reddit is the best?

Reddit has been the best for me, but your mileage may vary depending on content. More technical content may not do as well on Reddit (which is more of an artsy young group of people) versus Tip'd or PFBuzz which are solely Business/FInance. There is PFBuzz, Tip'd, BuzzUp, and a few others. I'll let you know if I think of any, but you basically know the really important ones.

I pretty much get traffic from Stumble Upon, Reddit, and Tip'd. I have had articles published (voted to the top) on PF Buzz and it has lead to 0 traffic!

I found out yesterday that one can add their feeds to Digg, so this is what I did. I suppose that this is a handsoff approach. Hopefully, it will work. I don't know about the other sites.

Something I've noticed is that my own articles do best when I am not the one who initially submitted them. Also a lot of thumbs up (Stumbleupon) or diggs or reddits or whatever in a short period of time seems to make the article get better traction. Anyone else notice this?

Dana – I am with you. Whenever someone else has nominated my articles, I have benefited best. Social media avenues are sophisticated enough to know/trace IPs and reward accordingly.
