The Frugal Path

From what I have read Google's search algorithm is very complex. I've been noticing that when I type in certain search phrases that relate to my posts, The Frugal Path has been on the very first page a lot.
I'm not sure if anyone knows this, but does Google give preference to sites that you have already visited? I obviously visit my site all of the time and if this is the case then it makes sense. Or does everyone receive the same results no matter what. If another person across the country and I both type in mortgage free retirement would our search results be the same? Or would they differ due to different factors, including sites we have visited?

From what I understand, not so much pages that you have visited, because Google has limited access to that information, basically sites you have visited from clicking their search results.
But if you are logged in, Google will account for social signals in the results it gives you. So pages that you have G+'ed or tweeted, or have been shared by somebody you follow on Google+. Their latest push is integrating GMail into search, which I assume means that it will try to look at your contacts and any information it can find from or about them to determine which results to show you.

Hey Justin,
Are you searching google when logged in to your google account (ie. Gmail)? If so, then yes, your site will show up on the first page for almost everything related to your site. Especially if you have webmaster tools setup as well. Google knows that you own your site and it will push your site up in the search results. If you want a better picture, open another browser that you can clear the cache and type in the same search terms. It should give you different results.

This confused me for a while as well. Like others have said, if you're logged into your google account when you search the results are weighted based on your G+ profile. Things you and your friends have +1'ed will rank higher than they would in a typical google search. There is an option once the results display to switch to "global" results which will show you the results that everyone else sees.

Thanks for the response. I had a feeling that something might have been affecting my results and you've confirmed it. When I went to a different desktop my results were a bit different.

Yes, Google not only taylor results to the person, they also taylor them to location. I am in the UK, and so I might rank higher in the UK than the US. However my content is just as relevant to the US and any other English speaking countires.
What I do to give me an idea of were I am ranking is to log out of my Google account, and go to http://www.Google.com/ncr The ncr stands for "no country redirect", so it is a version of Google that is neutral of location. When you click on the link the ncr will disappear, but you will still be in that version of Google. Hope this helps!

You used to be able to use Scroogle.org to see unbiased search results but that site was shut down.
I make sure I am logged out and use encrypted.Google.com which seems to work pretty well.
