Question: What do you do about spam?

I deleted over 6,000 spam last Monday.  I deleted another 6,000 on Friday.  Today, I deleted another 3,000!

Is anyone else getting this much spam?  If so, what have you done about it?  For those of you who use a captcha, does it help?

Holly, my experience has been that you are either stuck clearing spam or stuck approving comments. I've used Mollom, Honeypot and captchas and I've used them in combination. Spam is always a problem, though I've not seen it in the numbers you are. (ConsumerFu is a Drupal site, not WordPress….so module names might not be familiar.)

Club Thifty uses CommentLuv and I think you might see more spam because of their subscriber list. CommentLuv actually allows anyone to subscribe to a list of blogs that use the module. Spammers use that to find blogs that allow dofollow links in their comments. The real problem is that once they find you it really is hard to get them to leave you the ffffffffffff alone.

Edit….meant to add that we use Disqus and notice it is the comment system for the Frugal Travel Guy site. We rarely have spam using Disqus.

If you're using wordpress – try using the Askimet plugin.

Works a treat for me.

Holly, add GASP to your site – Growmap Anti-Spam Bot.  It's that little check box that asks you to confirm you're human.  It blocks most spam, and it combo with Akismet, it works really well.

I'll second Robert's suggestion. The combination took my spam from crazy levels to maybe a couple a day at most.

Can't recommend Akismet enough.

I use Akismet, Conditional CAPTCHA for Wordpress (which only puts up a CAPTCHA if Akismet thinks a comment is spam), and Better WP Security (that locks out multiple bad login attempts, as well as attempts to open non-existing pages on your site). I found that Better WP Security really put the kibosh on comment spam. Apparently a lot of it was coming from spambots that are also trying to log in using the default "admin" and other possible wp accounts. Better WP Security does have a few settings that I would stay away from, like renaming your database tables. I also changed the default bad login IP lockout from a few minutes to a full day. If you don't like Better WP Security because it tries to do too much, then a login checker, like Login Security Solution will accomplish the same thing.

I delete spam all the time. What's really weird is that my replies to comments show up in spam, too. Go figure.

The saddest thing I ever saw recently was someone's blog with all the "This is a great site, my cousin sent me here" spam (you know the type) in the comments, with the blogger thanking each of these people – like he thought was all for real. Oh, well.

Akismet works great.. Highly recommended.

You can get a key for free, but throw them a few bucks if you add the plugin to your site.

Also, I recently had to remove comments entirely from a single old post because the spammers just seem to love it.

I was getting 50-100 spam comments per day on that single page.  Akismet was catching them, but it was still a pain, none the less. Disabling comments on a single post is pretty tricky in the new version of Wordpress.  Feel free to ping me if you need any help with this.
