Is anyone else thinking the personal finance blog space is getting oversaturated? Maybe it's just me but I am seeing so many new blogs it's become even more important to be original. (especially when blog names are ever so similar)
On a related note, there are other niches that could use authority sites and those niches are not as crowded. Is that an argument for shifting focus?
And third and final point. With all of these PF blogs why don't we have a 'Blog her' type of ad network? Bueller? Bueller?

I think blogging in general has become saturated. Authority sites are something that I'm been meaning to think more about and see if it might be possible to reposition If You Can Read, You Can Cook from a food blog to a food authority site.
As far as the ad network, I believe Sam was talking about that a few weeks ago. http://yakezie.com/202321/pers…..s-welcome/

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

There will always be more people coming into the blogosphere, and any space for that matter, but a lot of people end up fading. I say stick with a space that you're interested in if you plan to publish a lot of content because it's too hard writing about things that we find boring.
Here's the url of Sam's post as it got garbled above, "http://yakezie.com/202321/personal-finance/yakezie-as-a-business-thoughts-ideas-solutions-welcome/"

I think that while there are more and more people entering, there are also people leaving. I know I typically allow a three month inactive period before I remove any blog from my feed reader, and the difference between the number I add and the number I remove slowly seems to be leveling out or at least not growing as much as it did even a couple of years ago.
Funny, because when I first started blogging in 2008, I wondered if there were already too many PF blogs for me to be noticed, and the number has probably gone up exponentially since then.

Yeah definitely I agree that I have seen many blogs leave in the ~3 years since I started blogging, along with many new players coming in.
I think that this just underlines the importance of choosing a blog topic that you are really passionate about.

I think that the PF blogosphere specifically is growing because money affects (effects..?) every part of everyone's lives. It's only natural that everyone wants to talk about how to get (and keep!) more of it.
I agree, if you want to succeed, a differentiator is a MUST! And since I don't have that at the moment, I need to think of some wild and wacky ways to make my site unique in the space. Maybe I'll create a "Call Me Maybe" cover song about being frugal and call it "Call Me Maybe (but only if you have a pre-paid cell phone with no data plan for under $35 a month so you can max out your Roth IRA)" and it'll go viral…Hmmmm..

I'm brand spanking new to the PF blogesphere. So, I'm going to gently through my two cents into the pile.
I think it would be hard to over saturate "personal" finance because its the personal that differentiates the blogs. If you're writing as a financial expert I can understand new blogs being unwanted competition but, if you're writing in a documentary style trying to share your experience in hopes of helping someone else, I don't see the problem.
Plus, the world economy is in the crapper. So, there are lots of people trying to clean up their own personal financial disaster. I don't get sick of reading other people's stories. It really helps me stay motivated to see different life journeys.

Considering the world economy, maybe there can't be enough pf blogs right now, haha.
I like what Money Beagle said up there that there are a lot of new bloggers coming online but a lot are trailing off, too.It seems like most blogs start up and fall apart in a few months.
Here's a little something to think about — I'm not a pf blogger, I fall more under the Lifestyle area; I talk about being a blue collar dude and the jobs I go on and people I deal with. The thing is, blue collar blogs are very very unsaturated. In fact, there's not a community at all. So I've latched onto yakezie, pf bloggers and some lifestyle-type bloggers for support. But it is a little lonely (awww ), not too many people to swap advice with or offer insight with. So, a saturated blogger world can be sucky, but so can an unsaturated one, lol. Although I admit, my posts don't usually get repeated by others and that's pretty cool.

Yeah, i remember Sam posting that but I haven't heard anything since then. Maybe it's still in the hopper.
I think it will be even more important to be differentiated. I was talking with a fellow blogger about this recently. But the more things change the more they stay the same.
I know there's definitely the lure of the high payouts for ads and affiliate programs. I saw a lifestyle blogger mention getting excited about a 13 dollar payout after 3 conversions. Although certain areas of the lifestyle niche are wide open and much more fun to look at, I think I'll stick to finance lol
@TB your blog is likely one of the most interesting to read. Mostly because I can relate to a lot of the stories.

The niche is more crowded but that also translates into being easier to gain social traction and get links. In niches without a community, it's REALLY difficult to get links. You can't guest post if there aren't any related blogs.

Maybe saturated isn't the best word. But the market is definitely matured compared to a couple years ago and much harder to make serious upward movement.
TB, I don't comment as much as I should, but I love your site. I'm working in construction these days, and my whole family is definitely blue collar. And I agree about some niches being very unsaturated. I remember a couple years ago when I was out of work and basically a "kept" man, I tried finding ANY sites about being a househusband. There a few about being a stay-at-home dad, but even that if very rare to find.

Hmm I'm not sure. I'm seeing a lot of new PF blogs, but I'm also seeing older PF blogs not blogging as much (or none at all). I always love reading new perspectives! As long it's not the usual boring posts. I love seeing a personal aspect.

Saturation only matters if you are blogging for income.
If you are awesome and you love talking about money who cares how many other people are doing it? Building off of that, you/most people on here started blogging b/c they wanted to talked about money or debt or investing (etc) I would be shocked if any of us have that many other things in his or her life that would meet the desire to write 3 or 4 posts a week.
It sucks but I know I don't lol

Good points. It's definitely causing me to reevaluate why I blog and get back to the more personal aspect of it all.

That is a great aspect of personal finance: each of our financial journeys are so unique! I love reading the intimate details and human aspect of money, of individuals and their struggles and achievements with wealth building. The PF blogosphere represents a great range, from multi-millionaires to struggling students to those overcoming bankruptcy.

I agree. I started my first blog to keep me motivated on my path to debt freedom. Once that occurred, it became a chore versus something I wanted to write about.
It was time to move one to a new topic and blog where I have the passion to keep it up.

Blogs come and go.. Yes indeed.
You can see a ton of growth if you are willing to put in a bunch of hours and hard work, which keeps people motivated.
But keeping blogs going for more than six months is a much harder concept.
Burnout is natural.. Which is why we see so much turnover.

What does oversaturation mean? A thousand blogs, ten thousand? As long as a site is getting consistent traffic (and generating reasonable revenue), then it doesn't matter. It does mean though that in a crowded field, good quality content matters more than ever. Posts on the importance of emergency budgets and clipping coupons have been done to death.
We've seen more than a few older blogs morph into into a staff writers' collective, or post infrequently and fade away. My own posting schedule has decreased from about 12-18 posts per month to 8-10/month. But it's been two years, 366 posts, still interested and still ticking. At last count, there are 98 items in my Draft Posts folder, fledgling ideas ready to be developed.
Let's stay motivated.
