So I have my first scrapper stealing my content and putting it on his site.  What do you guys do about this?  Also, it's causing a ton of pingbacks, should I delete the pingbacks or keep them?

My main concern is that I don't want Google to the interwebz to think the scrapper was the originator of the content, or get penalized for crappy links.

TIA for any input!

You can report the duplicate content (stolen content) to Google through this link:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/dmca-notice?pli=1&

They will reply to you within a few days of receiving your complaint.

Sometimes they will shutdown the offending site completely, other times they will simply drop the other site from their index.

I see people doing this from time to time with my site because I have a Google Alert set up for my site name. I generally report it to Google when I came. However, I haven't seen any negatives effects come my way b/c of anyone else doing this.

Nice thorough post. I need to get more proactive about this. I hate it when people steal my content!

I've never had it directly stolen for a long period of time.  Sometimes it'll get put out somewhere and they'll have some program that changes words but it ends up making it so nonsensical that all I usually do is laugh.

You should submit it to google using the form linked above, but otherwise there's nothing to worry about. This happens ALL the time and google doesn't have a problem figuring out which came first.

I ended up blocking the IP of the offender.  Hopefully that takes care of it.

Unscrupulous types seem to have a knack for bouncing around IP addresses

Yeah, there are tens of thousands of scrappers out there, even if blocking this scrapper's IP manages to keep this particular one away. There's really nothing you can do.

I had a scrapper problem for a while, and then went through what I wrote about it.  I haven't had a scraper in like 6 months, so who knows… (Knock on Wood)
