Google called out Forbes for selling links and passing it off as content. Forbes played dumb and finally removed the links.

More on this: http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/…..the-links/
Looking at a comment from Forbes, may be this was a genuine mistake.. either way, will suck if you were to be dropped by Google!

Google whacked a ton of sites back in the day–JohnChow, Freewebs, text-link-ads, etc–for selling links on pagerank. It really isn't worth it to sell links; you run the chance of throwing a perfectly good site down the Google toilet should they discover it (they will).
Truthfully, from what I've seen in the PF niche, it wouldn't be hard at all to see what sites are selling paid links and which aren't. It seems like every top blog on Wisebread's list has the same sidebar links as every other blog. Talk about leaving a footprint.

True JT. Google frowns upon this practise since it messes up their PR algorithim. I remember a while back Google had issues with another ad provider that made ads look like links (Textlinks I think it used to be called).
I wonder if Google gives a warning as it did to Forbes before taking action or they did that just because Forbes is big.

Truth be told Google doesn't say that you can't sell link ads. They just ask that you code it <rel="no follow">…and the FCC asks us to label them as sponsored or paid for. It's pretty simple.
Sell your hearts out all you want if you follow those two rules. The problem is that many advertisers want followed links. The choice is yours as to whether to accept them and the potential consequences.
That said, I wish Google would suck it.

Sandy, thanks for the info.
I heard a post on NPR about JCPenney getting smacked with manipulating google to come up 1st on lots of different key words, i.e. clothes, pants etc. Of course they denied any worong doing.

Text links on the side bar are more problematic if they don't add value to the reader other than just being a naked link. Google prefers that you add value to the reader whether links are paid or not. Yes, if you cram too many paid links that are to random sites they will probably penalize you. It's a risk every blogger has to take when deciding whether to accept a link (whether paid or not) or not.

All of these are interesting insights. It's tough to find a consensus.

I constantly debate whether I should sell TLAs. On the one hand, the money is good and they aren't intrusive, readers clearly know I've been compensated. It seems like a fair tradeoff. At the same time, I don't want Google to penalize me. Sometimes I wonder if I should remove them all (and give a prorated refund to the partners ugh :( ) and see if my traffic spikes. Yet, my traffic is slowly growing so maybe that's not necessary. I predict within a few months I'll be averaging 100 vistitors a day, possibly more. At some point, I'd like to get rid of TLAs once Adsense reaches a decent level, but that could be a loooonnggg time.

That story is fascinating Craig! As expected JCP is denying any responsibility!

Yeah, Google has officially said paid links that pass PR are no-nos for about 3 1/2 years. It was painful to take them down, though.
