Good afternoon guys
I have a quick question about SEO. I have been blogging for approximately 5 months now and while my Alexa ranking is below 200k I do not receive as much traffic from google as I would like. Typically I'm receiving around 30 searches a day. Is this normal?
I am FAR from an SEO expert but I am including titles, alternate text, and relevant keywords to my post.
Does anyone have any basic SEO practices that are working great for them? I have checked out SEOmoz.com but they charge $99/month.

30 searches per day is around where I am right now for edwardantrobus.com. While I have been blogging longer than that, this domain is about 4 months old.
I will dig through my email for some advice I once received, but some things to remember:
Google does penalize new domains. From what I've read, they have a tiered Staten where it takes up to 2 years to receive all the traffic that you rank for. IIRC, in the first 6 months, you only get 10 percent.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

First off, thank you for all the visits to my site. I really appreciate it. I'm no expert, but I do know that the more content on your site, the more the search engines have to send traffic to. I've been blogging for 3 years and my traffic and google traffic has grown steadily in the three years. The first few months were slower, but over time, guest posting, networking, and just adding content the google searches have improved.
Some folks do a lot of keyword research, use market samurai, or other tools. Others pour over their analytics at google analytics and webmaster tools. They are helpful in investigating the popular keywords for your site.
LaTisha has a very nice guide (Young Adult finances) and helpful advice about SEO, you might want to check her out.

Hi Marvin,
A few thoughts:
1) If you are getting 30 search hits a day (approximately 900 per month), and you just hit the 2000 visitor per month mark, that ratio is actually pretty high, especially for a relatively new website.
2) I have had good luck in increasing search traffic to one of my sites by setting up Google Authorship. Basically your site is linked to your G+ profile, and your G+ profile points to your website. If this is implemented correctly, you profile picture will show up on the left hand side of search results when a page on your site is mentioned. And people tend to click on these SERPs at higher rate given the trust factor of a face.
3) Take a look at which pages are getting search hits over the course of a month (via Webmaster Tools or Google Analytics). For your top pages and the search terms that drive people there, see where you rank in the search results. You might be able to improve things a bit by simply finding more posts on your site that could internally link to these winners.
Good Luck,
…Tim

I'm also a bit confused about SEO. Since I'm still in the 600,000 Alexa rankings, even if I have an SEO optimized post, it's probably no going to get a lot of search hits, right? I'm assuming that that will come as my blog gains some more tenure and links? Am I right about that?

Backlinks, Backlinks, Backlinks and more backlinks….
For a young site, getting any traffic search is a plus. For it to continue to grow, you have to get as many quality backlinks back to your site. Carnivals are good; but I would also focus on guest posting.
Tools like SEOMoz are extremely helpful but I know are expensive. For now, it's probably a bit premature to pay for it until you start making some revenue. Market Samurai is at least one time fee which can give you a ton of data starting out.
I started with MS, upgraded to Raven Tools and just recently moved to SEMRush.
And then as others said above: Content, content and more content. The more you have on your site to rank for the more potentially search traffic you'll get.

This is a gem, thank you. I have to admit I had to read it twice to fully understand but it's invaluable, thank you.

I use majestic SEO links are added in real time and are more user friendly than Moz.
I find the trick is to ensure you find a niche with good keyword volume and optimise for that. Topical and seasonal keywords do also. So for example if you want to write about the next the midterms in America, it's worth looking at longtail phrases and write content around that in hope that the content will be read closer to the election… just and example I'm sure there are other ones out there!!

I'd suggest reading "how to" articles on SEOMoz as well as SearchEngineLand. You can get most information in regards to SEO for free and then its a matter of testing.
A lot of it comes down to finding keywords or topics that are not to competitive for quick rankings although overall traffic volume may be slightly low, the sum of many niche articles quickly adds up. If you are writing about a popular topic that many people write about – if all things are the same from a technical standpoint (title tag, meta, content, etc) then it comes down to links, links, links as suggested by Jeff.
Free helpful tools are Googles keyword tool, insights tool, and SEOMozs toolbar for backlinks
Good luck

Thanks for the tips. I am a little familiar with SEOMoz but need to take another in depth look at it.
