I need some honest feedback about my site. Can you guys drop by for a quick look and let me know?
It's pretty clean right now and I like it that way. We don't have many sponsors right now so I don't need 3 columns.
- Should I change my theme to Thesis?
- feedback on adsense?
- How is my sidebar? Any suggestion? I'm thinking about getting rid of the category to clean up a bit more. I just changed to drop down now since it was taking up a lot of room.
- What widget is good for blog roll?
- Any suggestions are really appreciated! Thanks & Happy Cinco De Mayo.

I would like to hear some thoughts on the Thesis theme too. It sounds so good from what they say, but then, I don't see what features I need that I don't already have with a regular wordpress theme.
Regarding adsense, I don't really *like* having the big chunk of google ads in the beginning of each post, but it doesn't keep me from going to your site either. What it does is make it so that I can't see anything "below the fold" when I first open your website. i.e. I can't see the first line of your most recent post without having to scroll down, because the header + ads take up the whole screen.
How's adsense working out for you though?

I just changed to the big ad today. Previously I had a shorter image banner up, but I have seen suggestions to put the biggest ad up front. I think I'll try it for a month and see how it goes.
Last month I only made $10 from adsense.

Personally, I love the 3 column look. I think it would work well to bring more of your sidebar items above the fold. I think the font on the sidebar is pretty small, and the items are easy to overlook.
Why were you considering Thesis? Is there anything in particular that you are looking to incorporate into your site?
For me it was well worth the money because I know nothing about coding, and I don't have time to learn. It is extremely customizable, and there is so much support out there for it – and the Thesis Hooks plugin makes adding code very easy.
It makes SEO very easy, and a lot of the functions/options that needed to be coded into my previous theme are built in. Also, I was able to get rid of quite a few plugins after installing it.
Of course, if you want to go with Thesis, here is my affiliate link: http://knsfinancial.com/go/Thesis/

Ask yourself what you want to change on your site. Then see if you can find another site that may be similar and find out what theme they are using.
I've been on Thesis for a while and I love it. These days there may be other themes that may be as good or better. With Thesis you have a lot of knowledge out there from their forums and other people who develop the theme. I can't speak to other premium themes but I'm sure they have forums and such too.

I almost went with Thesis, but it seems like every PF blogger uses it. I would recommend the Genesis Framework. If you're new to coding, Genesis is much better. Thesis is a nightmare for anyone new to code. Just my 2 cents!

I LOOOOVVVEEEE Thesis, but it was a shock at first. I expected to be able to throw it up and have automatic amazingness. That is not the case. You have to have a clear vision for what you want and be able to create it within the framework. Basic CSS and PHP knowledge are a must. I am self taught and have been able to work through Thesis setup a few times quickly.
I have heard good things about Genesis, but I am a Thesis guy.

Also, I would add a more custom looking image at the top. The one you have is pretty, but kind of generic.

I've yet to hear of anything that can't be done in Thesis that the free Atahualpa can't do.

Thesis isn't a must have, but I think using one of the more well known frameworks (thesis, headway, etc) has benefits. You get a large support community to turn to for help. You can type "*framework here* tutorials" and find lots of examples so you can teach yourself easily how to get something done.
I'm using thesis right now and have no complaints. My site looks decent, IMO, but it's not quite where I want it to be. I've been wanting to get a redesign done by someone other than me ;) for a while but just have to convince myself the $ is worth it. No matter what theme you use, most people will get better results by hiring someone.

Help forum for atahualpa.
I've yet to find a problem the fellas over there can't help me with – usually within a few hours.
Thesis IS great – I have no qualms giving it props – but Atahualpa is FREE and very very good. I've read a lot of reviews and basically if you want to edit code Ata is the way to go (seems to be the biggest reason coder webmasters choose it – flexibility).

First, for the price, atahualpa is definitely worth a try. I use it in another blog of mine. The clean, slick, professional look of thesis is what made me want thesis initially (yes I like a lot of white space in a blog :) ). But I got over that pretty quickly because every single dollar I spent for my blog except the initial hosting, I gave myself time to earn it. I really evaluated and reevaluated my choices. This is why I went with thesis (just my opinion, not saying thesis is the best or for that matter "any" theme is best… every theme is only as good as what you make out of it)
-Speed. My site was already slow. I did several tests (not anything professional, just some beginner type test) and thesis was much faster. The css was loaded in ATA, yes, I can cache it using W3, but with W3 turned on both themes, thesis was consistently faster.
-I got rid of 16 plugins after moving to thesis. Yes, I could have done similar thing if I really pulled ATA apart, but thesis was faster and I don't have much time.
-After going thin on plugins the performance improved as well. It is still slow due to stupid ad codes, but hopefully moving some of the static files to Amazon cloud might help (whenever I get to it).
-Once I got the hang of it, the customization was a breeze, I could do all sort of things without plugins. Including displaying targeted rotating ads in my sidebar which translates to a better conversion rate (my targeted is a little better than google ). May be ATA can do that too? But with thesis it was 15 min work to set the whole thing up.
And I did really like the boring, clean look. Is thesis necessary? Absolutely not. I just decided early on my first year revenue would do back to blog and second year onwards to charity. It was one of the better ways to put back to my blog, so I bought.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll check out Atahualpa and keep Thesis and Genesis in mind…
I don't like the 3 columns look. It just seems so cluttered to me, but I guess that's what everyone is going with these days. I guess if I have more ads/sponsors, the 3 columns would be better.
I do need a logo and banner rework.

I use Atahualpa and it is pretty amazing. The options seem limitless (although, since I am not a real techie guy… I have many limits). If I have an idea to do something with my site, I was able to perform all of them with Atahualpa. :)

We found 3 columns clunky too until I switched the layout. Instead of Left-Centre-Right we switched to Centre-Inner Right-Right.
We've had a lot of good feedback on how this change looks and works for readers.
As for Thesis being clean, perhaps i'm biased, but I feel our site is pretty "clean" too.
@Suba – i'm not sure if ATA can do all of that, and I def. need more plugins as they aren't built in. Eric is helping me streamline those a bit :) Haven't had a need for rotating ads – Adsense does that on it's own and for the time we had affiliate ads (e.g. flexoffers) on our site we never got a single click so I dumped them entirely.
@Derk – ATA is really flexible and if you can't figure out how to do something the forums are helpful. JuggleDad is pretty awesome and quick to response.

I like the Center, inner and outer right column format too. Still looks uncluttered. I am considering applying this to my LightWord theme, as it allows me to add a third column. I will do this when I begin allowing advertisements on the site….the subject of which I will raise in another post.

Everything related to blog is of course a matter of personal opinion… how much ads, what type of ads, theme…
The rotating ads were flexoffers. I used to have them in sidebars, like a 4-5 125X125 buttons, but I didn't get a single click. I used them to just fill the space when I was looking for real advertisers. Then I figured, real advertisers who are not looking for just text links don't buy button (99% of the time). So I scraped the whole button panel and just started targeting my own flexoffer ads – on the posts I discuss online banking, the sidebar shows Ally bank or discover… Any posts I talk about credit cards, I showed credit card ads. That up'ed the CTR. The ideal way to do affiliate marketing is reviews, but I don't write reviews much, only if I already used them for a long time and like. I will be able to write about the products/services I started using after an year or so. Until then, the targeted ads are the only way for me to make any money from flex offers.
If you are not interested in flexoffers or CPM ads, then no need for rotating ads. The simpler, the better :)

I agree that you should find a blog that you like and ask about that theme. Your current site looks pretty good. It is a solid free theme.

I've actually discovered (yet to test it) a way to mimic the Thesis theme. The right side would have one large block, spanning both right columns at the top of the 2 right columns and then they split below that.
The reason I haven't implemented this year is that I need content for the large block (likely an ad + subscription options).
