Should I try affiliate marketing for my taco seasonings?

Despite some good reviews, my line of taco seasonings hasn't really been gaining any traction. A large part of it comes down to traffic, I think. There just isn't a ton of it on the main site to direct attention to the taco seasonings. So, I've been thinking of starting an affiliate program. I was thinking of offering a 5% commission. Is this something that anyone would be interested in?

Also, if anyone more experienced with affiliate marketing has any suggestions for getting started, I'd appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

Hi Edward,

An affiliate program is a good idea, but I know from past experience that if you simply set it up and do nothing, no one will join. Probably the best idea would be to email all the cooking, recipy, taco related sites etc. and give them good reasons why your product is a good match for their site. What makes your product unique and of benefit to consumers. Spend a few days and send literally hundreds. Hopefully you will get a handful or more signups and you're away.

Also keep working on your sales copy and make it better and better over time. Experienced affiliate marketers will not touch a product with a weak sales page, no matter how great the product is. Check out the top affiliate products on networks such as Clickbank to see what sort of things work.

In short what you have to do is really SELL your affiliatre program if you want to attract affiliates. Good luck and if you need any advice down the line, don't hessitate to ask!

So instead of selling my taco seasoning, I'm selling my affiliate program. Sounds like I'm right back to playing at my weaknesses instead of my strengths.

I think the key to selling more of any product is exposure – if people don't know it's out there, they aren't going to buy it. A couple of easy ways to market it before jumping to an affiliate program:

  • Guest post on other sites. Not a spammy "let me pimp my product" post, but a real post, maybe with recipes that specifically use the seasoning.
  • Reviews. Have you considered reaching out to cooking/mom blogs and asking them to review the taco seasoning in exchange for a free sample?
  • SEO. Are you ranking for any keywords related to taco seasoning? Getting any search traffic? (And you may very well be; I don't mean to assume that you aren't.)
  • Consider a dedicated site for the products. I think this is huge – right now you've got a sales page on one of your sites, but that doesn't scream "professional taco seasoning sales guy" to me. I think a clean, well-designed ecommerce site that focuses only on the taco seasoning would go a long way.
  • Include a couple of recipes with orders. Maybe just one or two, then that would allow you to upsell a complete recipe book where every recipe uses the taco seasoning.
  • An Etsy store. I buy stuff like this all the time on Etsy, and I know a lot of other people who do as well. That might be a great platform to use to gain more exposure/sales.
  • It might be good to have the shopping cart display at the top of the page once people add a product. At first I didn't think the button worked because I didn't see any change on the page until I scrolled down.

I just ordered some taco seasoning and will gladly put up a post with a review after I've tried it. I also suggest a dedicated Paypal account for the seasoning – sending a payment to Seam Publishing seemed strange since it's not really related to the product.

I hope at least some of this is helpful!

Edited to add: letsmaketacos.com is available – just sayin'. :)

Andrea,

Thanks for the advice. I was just thinking about a dedicated site earlier today. It seems that domains are like tattoos; you start of with one, and then you just can't stop!

Hi Edward,

One issue with affiliate marketing I have found is that if the product is not over a certain threshold in price it is hard to entire folks for a small slice of the profit.  El Paso seasoning here in Canada is about $1.25 a packet.  It would be hard for someone to entice me to promote such a product even at 100% ($1.25) affiliate earnings.

You couldn't get me to hawk Old El Paso for any price, but I get your meaning. I do believe that people will take low affiliate payouts. Otherwise, Amazon wouldn't have the size program that it does. And it's probably a lot easier to entice someone to buy a $3 ebook than a $100 financial product.

Note that 5% is also of the cost, not of my profit. My payout would be more like half of my profit!

Perhaps Edward.  But then I don't think I would ever buy a "premium" taco seasoning.  Being frugal and a lover of spices I would try various recipes on the Internet I could test out using our over-stocked spice cupboard until I found one I liked before I paid for a premium product which I may or may not enjoy.

Point taken about Amazon – the payouts are pretty low.  I guess that is why I haven't drowned SPF in amazon affiliate links.  Instead I prefer to use CJ or Flexoffers for financial products.  You need to take aim at what might work for your site.  The suggestion that you focus on Mum / Food blogs is a good one.

A very valid point. You may want to check If You Can Read, You Can Cook for recipes for my seasonings.

One suggestion I was recently given was to offer a trial size as well. A single serving to provide a low-cost way of deciding if you like the blend. That's one of the things I'm going to try to integrate over the coming weeks.

Good idea on the samples.  Perhaps give some to prospect affiliate sites.  Have then try the seasoning, write a mini review, and then add some samples for a giveaway.  A great incentive for people to try, write about and give readers a chance to sample the product.

I recommend that you get the domain.  It's a good one.  I see that you haven't yet.

I'd also think of other things to sell with the taco seasoning.  Some kind of gift pack for Cinco de Mayo? :)
