I've been testing a new plugin for spam comments. Before using the plugin, I would regularly receive in excess of 150-200 comments in my spam folder each day. After? I'm down to less than 10 on most days.
It uses a few services to check against a blacklist. If the commenter matches that blacklist, they don't even get so far as putting a comment in. I haven't had any reported false positives, but I'm sure it's not perfect. In any case, it does seem to have worked rather well.
The name of it is AVH First Defense Against Spam
p.s. it's a wordpress plugin, so those of you without wordpress will be out of luck. sorry. ;)

The only thing that I don't like about GASP, is that, like Captcha, it requires commenters to do something to verify themselves. With this plugin, there's no extra step to get a comment approved. Which doesn't take into account false positives, but so far, I haven't had any that have been reported, so don't know how much of an issue that is.

Yeah. There were days where the spammers must have been making concentrated efforts and I got close to 300. Needless to say, getting down to less than 5 a day is pretty freaking spectacular.

I use Akismet with conditional CAPTCHA (only comes up when it thinks you are a spammer) on Disqus. The combination has been working well for me, but I don't have the same level of SPAM that you do.

KNS, when I say that I was getting 300 a day at times, they were all ending up in the spam comments folder, but with as many of my fellow yakezie who occasionally get stuck in there, I didn't feel comfortable just emptying it. Now, I get none, so it's much easier to find those few who get caught in the spam folder, and release them.

Wow, that is pretty amazing! I'll have to look into it to see exactly how it works. Do you use it in conjunction with Akismet?

Yep, it runs right alongside Akismet. Anything that gets through it, has to go through Akismet too.

I am going to try to install this because, like you, I have been getting 100 to 200 spam comments a day (half by the same spammer, it seems). I also don't want to just delete my spam folder contents. Thanks for the tip.
