Currently my blog looks awful and I want it to look decent. The challenge is that I do not have the budget to get it done by a developer or a buy a good theme. All I have is $50-$75 to spend at the moment.
Any suggestions on what theme I should be using as well as anyone who can do the logo for me for the price.
I am hoping that once I start making money with this blog then I can pay for a nice theme and customization however cannot do that today.

I don't have any suggestions though I'm sure that others probably will. I'm writing because I'm curious to see if you'll post your final decisions and cost once you figure it out. I'm probably going to be in the market later this year and it sounds as if our criteria is similar.

I can't recommend the Genesis framework highly enough. The framework itself is $59.95, but you can use it on unlimited sites. Then the child themes (and there are tons of them) are only $19 each once you've purchased the framework. There is a TON of information about Genesis available online, including support forums where you can get instructions and help with specific customizations.
Genesis is not "easy" in terms of drag and drop, but each child theme has instructions on how to set it up like the demo, and they're pretty easy to follow. You can also find tons of examples for customizing the different child themes, changing colors, etc. Genesis also has built-in SEO (no need for a plugin).
Here's my affiliate link (link) but don't feel pressured to use it – you can just search for Genesis framework if you want. I use Genesis all the time and it's my favorite – I use it on my own blog and on many of my clients' sites as well.

I second Genesis. All the themes look great out of the box and the support is phenomenal.
I used it for my first site, lenagott.com, when I didn't have a clue what I was doing, and I think it might be the best looking of the bunch! (I've used a different theme for each site to test the waters LOL) Next time I'm going back to Genesis! Or Andrea :)

I'm a long time Thesis guy (here is my link: Thesis Theme). There is a bit of a learning curve, but it has been great for me and helped me get to the next level.
Version 2.0 just came out and removes the need for any PHP code changes. Now it is all drag and drop theme editing.
I got my logo from 99 Designs (link: 99 Designs). Not the cheapest but amazing results.

Thesis 2.0 has left a bad taste in my mouth. I recently picked up Genesis and it looks great (just need to get a bit more familiar with it).
Now that might fit the budget or skill you are looking for though. I think there is a good free theme out there but I can't recall the name.
Also Peter of Logos for Websites (aff link) does great, you guessed it, logos.

I'm with Glen, I'm in the process of switching over to Genesis (but not from Thesis), and just having the framework without a child looks better than most complete sites I've seen. It's certainly not the easiest transition to make, but it feels like the right move to make and guts are usually right.

Sounds good! I wouldn't be too hard on yourself though. Especially in the beginning, I think it's more important to get good content written than worry about the looks of the site. You can fix that up along the way!

As a free theme I like Sight from wpshower and you can get a banner or logo on Fiverr to get started.

I don't see the need to pay for a theme, there are a lot of free themes out there that can get the job done just as well IMO.
I'm kind of in the same boat as you with a logo…I have a friend who is good in photoshop say they'd make one for me for free, but there has been a lot of foot dragging on their end. So I'm right with you, starting to explore my options for a paid logo/banner.

I agree about themes. I use Twenty Eleven and it works well enough for me.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

So, finally I have gone for Genesis theme. I have for now installed a free theme. Scouting for a good child theme for Genesis and also getting a logo done.
Thanks everyone for the advice

I'll echo the Thesis recommendations. Great, clean looking layouts for a reasonable price. And with a lot of Googling and forum-posting, you can customize it almost any way you want.
I'm with you on the logo. Mine is pretty terrible and I'd also be curious to hear any other suggested vendors out there.

Sorry, I meant Genesis. Not Thesis.
Good to hear you've gone with them.

I would have come here with a Thesis recommendation, but I am really struggling to get comfortable enough with 2.0+ to incorporate it into my main sites.
I've seen a lot of good looking sites using the Atahualpa theme, which is free and has tons of options.
And I second the recommendation for Peter (Logos for Websites).

Peter does a great job, and of course I have to mention that I do logos as well (though Peter does them cheaper). :)

Genesis all the way. If you get a child theme it looks great plus it's super fast. And you can customize it further if you'd like.

Not sure if you are still looking for a logo, etc. but you could always try fiverr. That's the really economical stuff! If you have a little more to spend, I've had a lot of success with Designer Blogs. They have both pre-made and custom themes available for competitive prices. If nothing else, its worth keeping in your back pocket for when you are looking to reinvest or refresh your blog down the road.

Yep, Genesis for me. Only wish I'd taken the plunge sooner.

I've switched to Genesis as well. Seems like that's what all the cool kids are doing :)
The SEO isn't bad out of the box but I'm using the Yoast SEO plugin instead. The Genesis SEO part is "polite" and gets out of the way, so that's nice.
Oh, and I've installed Genesis Simple Hooks until I get more comfortable adding stuff directly to functions.php.
