Hey all,

I have been waiting for the most recent PR update to switch my site's theme to something that looks cleaner (I always hated how my widgets looked on Magazine basic [my old theme]).

Feel free to take a look at my site with the atahualpa theme (which has become my theme of choice) and let me know what you think. Feel free to offer suggestions on what could be better as well. I tried to keep it similar to the old feel as much as possible.

I've been wondering how to do a refresh of my site as well! It doesn't look too bad! One thing I would do is centre your items within the sidebars and perhaps shrink the size of the right sidebar to match the size of the left.

Congrats on the theme change.  However, for me I see so much white on the right where the logo is that I am looking there and not at the logo. I like that your logo is on the left but there should be something leading me to the logo and not just dead space.

I like how it looks, nice job on the switch.

One minor change might be the right sidebar size, getting it a bit smaller. But no big deal, the new look is good as is anyway.

The new theme looks good.  You definitely need something in the top right white space.  I assume you're saving that for a banner, but if not, maybe move the social media buttons and search box up there.

To me the sidebars look a bit overwhelming with the ads so tight together.  You might want to spread those out a bit more.  I personally don't mind right sidebar being wider than the left, but it does throw off the centering of the content though.

Thanks everyone! Yes, it appears that it would be better to ad something in the header image. I'm afraid I don't have the coding skills to move the social images up there. I'm thinking about adding a "as seen in" image that I have seen on some blogs since I have had a few big mentions. We'll see…

If you have any other ideas or suggestions, feel free to shoot them my way. I have a feeling I may go with a premium theme later this year.

Corey: I was also thinking an As Seen On: and maybe a larger sized testimonial from a reader, something short and laudatory about your site, would look good in the header.

Otherwise, I think it looks great.

You might try making the post headlines darker, like black. Or see how it looks matching them to the green in your logo.

Looking good!

Corey, Jai is right. Too much white area here… The big white area is a void, and since this is the second place your eye goes after the logo you'r losing a prime area for media, ads or whatever.

If you need something custom, I could code that up for you no problem ;) Let me know what you need, and send me an email!

Cheers

I too use Atahualpa.

You might want to either nofollow or remove the links to Wordpress and Atahualpa in the footer.  These are external links you don't need on your homepage.  I found the answer searching the web as I am too cheap to pay for "gold" status @ the ATA forums.

The white space top left is too much as stated.

Have you considered moving to 2 columns instead of 3?  I started w/ 3 but moved to 2 and haven't looked back.  I also have some code if you want to either (a) split your footer into columns or (b) keep some a full width block of space at the top of the right sidebar with multiple columns of space underneath (to mimic the Thesis theme look).

Drop me a line if you have questions about Atahualpa – i've used it for over a year and like it a lot.  That being said, I am considering moving to thesis like RB40 did – for optimal speed.  I also won a free theme from http://themefuse.com/ but i'm not sure I want to use something that fancy.

I'll be honest, I like white space but there is a bit too much of it here.  I like SPF's thought of two columns.  And a tweek to your header should help the white space issue.

I LOVE your social media buttons.  Where did you get those?  I'd like to steal them.  :)

Thanks John – that's a great point about the headlines. I had meant to change that and I agree- looks much better now. I will work on the As Seen On.

I just googled how to remove the links. I had wanted to remove them before. I just removed them (easy enough). Thanks for the tip!

I have thought about going to two columns. I am going to give it some thought. I may even just move the left column to an inner right. Not sure. I will have to play around on my subdomain to figure out what I want to do. I will definitely let you know via email if I need some of that code. Thanks!

@everyone – thanks! You guys rock! Now, I need to spend some more time on this… haha

I tried inner right as well.   Ultimately I found that if I wanted a 1000px width for the site and to work the right side bar as I wanted, it was one column on the right.  I suppose if I widened the page it would accommodate more space but thus far I find less is more.

I like that better. Play around with Picnik to clean up the as seen section, but the overall look is nice.

Let me know if you need any help with it.

I like this one better – it is clean and crisp. But as Jai mentioned may be a bit too clean – needs something else but have no idea what; sorry.

It looks better… Maybe add a little back shadow so it's not so white in the middle and you should be good.

I think it looks great, I'm with Jai on the white space though. I would also agree with the suggestion on 1 sidebar or maybe just flow from text to pic in the sidebar so it doesn't seem so full. The sidebar could use more white space.

Nice job on the redesign though

I think if you had your social media icons (maybe smaller) above your "As Seen On", that might help.   I would then have your top right sidebar begin with your Popular Articles and I would list way more than you have.   Another thought is to move your Google Search to the top, too.
