I don't have a definite answer on this question. this is why I am asking your thoughts on it:
I have seen a few sites with tag clouds. This is a basic plugin from Wordpress that publishes internal links where you mention X and X keywords. I was never tempted to publish tag clouds on my site for the following reasons:
- it takes add space (evil laugh)
- it creates more links from my homepage (many SEO pros mention that the fewer link on your homepage, the more juice each link has… make sense)
- I'm not quite sure how many people are actually tempted to click on tags instead of surfing directly through your categories or archive?
I know I have already a lot of links on my homepages (each site is build in a similar way). But I've tried to take off a few sections such as archive (I just put 1 link to my archive list), tag clouds and blogroll (then again, 1 link that leads to blog that I read). I think it's better for SEO purposes but I would like to know if you have read otherwise or seen great SE results for keywords that are replicated in your tag cloud.
cheers,
Mike.

I personally started out with no tag cloud, then added one, and then took it down because it was killing my outbound link stats for an advertiser. Honestly, I never liked it and thought it was ugly. It just looks disorganized. I look forward to seeing everybody else's response on this though!

I agree with the tag cloud taking up real estate. If I want readers to surf through, I'd rather help guide them with popular articles and such.

There's probably a small percentage of people who surf using the tag clouds, but I agree the real estate and outgoing links are too valuable. I got rid of my archives to and now just have one link to my archives page which I created using the Clean Archives plugin.

I may be one of the few that gets about 10% of my search engine traffic directed to my tags. So, I think the cloud does help. I just keep it very low, so people have to scroll down quite a bit to find it.

I have to say that I, as a reader, have never been found of those tag clouds. They annoy me so I ignore them. I can't say if they serve a purpose with SEO or not, but from a reader's perspective I find that they get in the way. If you must have one, do as the College Investor does and keep it low.

Personally, I hate the look of tag clouds, and I have never used them as a reader. I'm not sure about any SEO benefits, however.

I don't use them but I see that my tags show up as individual links in Google, so I tag the articles but I don't display the cloud. Too messy.

Hmm…this has been an enlightening thread. If tag clouds are annoying to this many people, I might just remove mine. Glad this topic was brought up!

i don't know this for a fact because i am not a programmer, but i have heard from "programmers" that incorporating these actually convolutes the back-end code further. i never felt the need to use them because of the theme i am on, and i am very happy with organic traffic so far

I personally can't stand the tag cloud. I consider myself an SEO guru, and in my opinion does not live up the the claims you see on the internet. Oh, and it's hella ugly…

I don't use a tag cloud on Narrow Bridge and don't plan to add one. I have one on my Israel blog where I cover a much wider range of topics. On that site they help with SEO a little bit, but I just use the Thesis SEO and category fields to take care of it on my finance blog.

Personally, I find that popular posts are always attractive to look at when I surf. I can assume that it does the same for anyone that lands on your web site. It's a way of showing what's worth looking at. A tag cloud is messy except for the obvious bold that stand out if you have any, otherwise it's just plain messy and hard to read.
It might be another reason to promote some other links on your side bar I would say.

I have been using the tag cloud, but I am not really liking how it looks. It just feels to messy and out of place. I am going to be taking it down soon.

I took mine down last weekend. Thanks for the input. I never liked the cloud, it's just so messy and I never use it.
