I'm not sure how it happened, but for the second time this month The Consumerist picked up one of my posts. This time, it was my musings on the delightful TV show "Lizard Lick Towing". I'm puzzled by the choice but I'm certainly not going to complain!
I will say, though, that the comments on the post on The Consumerist site are quite entertaining (especially given the fact that they're going off what's on the site rather than reading my post). I don't have a very thick skin so people being mean is kind of hard but it's a lesson I need to learn. I just wish they could see the humor in it rather than taking the post so literally. Oh, well.

Congrats again. Yes it's amazing how anonymity seems to allow people to write things they would never say out loud and certainly not to a persons face. One of the downsides to being a public personality is dealing with those people.
Over time your skin will get thicker. Put the negatives out of your mind immediately. If they have a differing opinion than you, but are not attacking you personally, then engage them. You won't change their mind, but they will respect you for it.
The personal attacks just get ignored as they are not worthy of any of your precious time.

I told you that it really doesn't mean anything to be mentioned there since those readers are only there to write stupid things and make themselves feel better. It's almost like the posts on ESPN articles, where people go not to make educated comments about stories but to shoot their mouths off because like Dr. Dean said, the power of anonymity allows junk to spew from their fingers.
Before you allow them to get to you, look at the source and you'll realize that it's not worth it.

Congratulations on the mentions. As Eric and Dr. Dean have said, don't take those comments too seriously. It seems that most people who leave comments on large sites are all trying to win the "biggest jerk" award.

Thanks, guys I'm trying not to take anything too personally because I know the majority of people commenting haven't taken the time to read my original post. Mainly, it just makes me sad that people have to be so mean.

Congratulations. What is the saying, any publicity good or bad is good! I am sure there is a lot of people who are reading the post without leaving a coment too.

Eric–I meant I had to check on The Consumerist post. I know that no one here would be mean!
Larry–Thanks for that!

Congratulations again Jana. You are on a roll!
I wouldn't worry about the dumb comments on The Consumerist either, I know it's hard, but they obviously aren't getting it.

Congrats on the mention! Maybe this isn't the case, but I've also noticed that they seem to comment more rudely on posts that were originally by women. I had one person tell me I needed to lose weight (huh?), among other stuff. But! I got quite a few new subscribers out of my site's mention, and of course a ton of traffic! Focus on the good stuff :)

The one mention I ever had in Consumerist was tied to being an "editors pick" in the Carnival of Personal Finance, but I had more hits on that post from a blog dedicated to trolling and tearing down personal finance blogs. You need a thick skin when you get lots of attention, but if you are truthful and genuine, you will always overcome.

Congrats!!! I know it's hard but those mean comments must be ignored. They are saying more about themselves than they are about you. They are letting the world know they are mean, nasty, and not that bright. None of that has to do with you.

That's awesome. They were two very well written articles, so I am not so surprised that you got picked up twice.

Thanks again, everyone. I've decided the best way to handle this is avoidance. I'm proud of what I wrote and I don't need to be made to feel like it's anything less than adequate by a bunch of people who are too insecure to put themselves out there. I'm just glad they kept it on The Consumerist and didn't come and trash me on my own site.
I did pick up a few new readers so it's not all bad!

Your post was picked up because you are awesome!
I haven't read the comments over there for this, but know I got some pretty stupid ones when I had a post linked to from there. One person thought my post was so stupid that the Consumerist blogger who linked to it must have been doing me a favor, and another who came over to my site and posted about he, in his mid-20s had owned multiple luxury cars and I was dumb for saying I'd never buy a Lexus, after all, he'd just bought his fiance one (which I found really funny since my post was about how you shouldn't by cars as gifts) and they both loved them.
One of my writing teachers once gave our class some excellent advice, in fact, it was her motto and printed on coffee mugs we each got at the end of the course- Just Smile and Nod
