Howdy Folks,
I've been thinking about this topic for a bit now, so I wrote a post on Yakezie.com entitled, "Build Robust Content By Speaking From Left to Right."
The idea is to write about such basic topics, no matter how boring, so that everyone can relate. I did a case study on Financial Samurai and found that if I write about simple topics, there is much more commentary at least. Also, take at the top sites in our space. Many are coupon bloggers and blogs that focus around frugality. Everybody can cut costs, but not everybody can make money with money.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on diluting our topics and our voice to generate more traffic and interaction.
Thanks,
Sam

I live in Silicon Valley, yet I know more people that watched Jersey Shore and watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians than watch Nova or Ted Talks. It's sadly probably a constant in every form of media.
Luckily, blogs can turn on a dime – you can write mindless frugality copy one day, then cover the options greeks the next!

I've been doing this for four and a half years and I still have no ability to properly predict what articles are going to resonate and which will be glossed over. I've written many a post where, upon completion, I sit back and practically say 'Man, that's epic' only to see it get five comments, where something else that I throw out in ten minutes resulting from a spur of the moment thought ends up with 40 comments and gives a page view spike.
Maybe I'll have to look back, and it could be that the ones I thought were epic were too far away from the common themes.
In truth, though, I don't let comments drive what I write. When something hits my mind that I really want to share, I do it.

Based on my top viewed posts, I would say people are searching for frugality, or a way to get into money without much effort. So I'd say you're spot on.

It's funny. My posts on how to save a few nickels get clicked, while the ones that could save people thousands are ignored.
Generally my posts on goals and goal setting do really well. I have one up today about two guys running 100 miles that hopefully falls into this vein…..

Readers love the "how to get rich" and "wealth tips" articles. I don't find a huge correlation between comments and page views. I think one would need to spend some time analyzing their metrics to really figure out their own formula! Interesting thread.

"How to get rich" quick jives well w/ my thesis of the post that we need to write about what the majority of people would like to do and understand, even if the author is not rich him or herself.
Comments is a secondary bi-product. It's all about traffic at the end of the day.

Scenario 1) If I get 1,000 visitors in a day (quadrupling my number of usual traffic) but only 5 comments, my blog had a good day.
Scenario 2) If my blog gets its usual 200 or so visitors and I get 25-50 comments (more than usual), then I (as a blogger) had a good day.
Subtle difference but worth considering when looking at what we want to drive our blog.

I'm not gonna lie! I'd rather have a lot more traffic than comments!

I was thinking recently about toning down not only content, but my replies and interaction.. I think ideally I would like comments to feed off one another without my input. I do worry that sometimes my topics and replies could be too intimidating for people to engage with.

Speaking as a commenter, I'm specifically interested in the author's opinion of what I have to say. When an author doesn't respond to comments, I stop commenting and even reading that site.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon
