If that headline doesn't get your attention then nothing will….haha!!

Alright ladies and gentleman the next movement is on and this time it centers around debt.  I figure an easy topic that all us PF bloggers can jump on.   Here's how this movement is going to be different.

1.  It won't be just one day.   The movement will start January 1 and last 90 days.  At the end of the 90 days will have the one day where everyone blogs about the topic.

2.  I'm creating a new site dedicated to the movement:  debtmovement.com.  I still have blog posts on GFC about it, but I'm hoping the new site will share our reader stories of people beginning the journey to get out of debt.  I would also like to feature other bloggers and their real life stories/tips of how they beat debt.

3.  Instead of prizes I'm trying to orchestrate "debt scholarships" for participants who take the challenge.  Still trying to iron out those details.

This Community is a Force

I seriously think this has the ability give that much more exposure to the financial blogging community.   FINCON has helped immensely (Thanks PT!) and with CBS and other major networks giving us props, our community is only to get stronger and STRONGER.   It's a very exciting place to be.  Laugh

What I need from you all…..

While the launch is January, we need to start prepping our readers to get ready (for those that are in debt that want help).  I suggest writing a few blog posts prepping them for it or even better surveying your readers.   Thanks to Baker from ManVsDebt.com I sent out this 6 question survey (using free version of Survey Monkey) to my readers today and the results are insane.   Some of the key findings:

1. 83.3% are struggling with Debt

2. 40% have $50k or more (not including mortgage)

3. And the kicker:  91.1% want a plan to help them get of debt.  <<<<Wow!!

Our readers want and need our help!

I still have a lot of work to do but I wanted to make sure you all know what was on the horizon.   Also, if you're interested in helping out with this movement, I'M ALL EARS.   I'm going to need some help from my blogging friends.  Wink

Jeff,

Helping others get out of debt is one of my big initiatives on my site. I even put put together budgets for people and publish them to encourage others to get on a budget and get out of debt as well.

Let me know if there's any way I can be of assistance for this! Laugh

I'm seriously wanting to outsource as much as I can with this.  For example, if anyone has time to help out with creating the site, THAT WOULD BE HUGE.   I have the Thesis Developers license, so that's not a problem.  I just want something relatively simple like the Fincon blog.   Nothing that deserves "Best Designed Blog" for Plutus Awards.  :)

Of course, who ever helps gets mad recognition on the site for being a major contributor for the movement.

Anyway, just stuff like that.

A couple of other things to contemplate…..

I'm going to have people sign up for a newsletter that will promote some of YOUR best tips.   That's right….really want to promote the community here.

Throughout the 90 day movement, I want to host to some Google Hangouts with 3-4 other bloggers where we help with readers questions.   I'll then record them and upload them to the site.  Bam!

It's going to be tricky to keep the momentum going for 90 days but the challenge of that has me SUPER pumped.  Haha….I'm such a financial geek.  Cool

Sorry, but none of my readers have $10,000,000 in debt… ;-)

Seriously, sounds like a cool project. Good luck!

I'll let Andrea take first dibs at the site if she wants it, but I'm pretty sure I can volunteer my brother to build the site.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Jeff,

What a cool idea, and I love your enthusiasm and ability to create stuff like this. How can I get in on this? I want to be a contributor to the site and movement. I also want to compete for a scholarship :) But I definitely want to share stories and get people excited about paying off debt. Should I email you or what?!!

Finance geeks UNITE!  I'm soooo there.  I'd be happy to participate in a Google Hangout if you're have an evening one (so I can be kid-free).  ;)

I'm gonna work on some post ideas.  Are you thinking there will be groups of participants, like those who are trying to pay off credit card debt, those who are tackling mortgages, those who are focusing on student loans, etc?  90 days sounds like a crazy turnaround, but I'm sure you're thinking BIG MEDIA to see those kinds of numbers?!

I'll help in any way I can!

What I would like to do with the Google Hangouts is tackle different types of debt:

Medical Bills

Student Loans

Credit Cards, etc….

I can then have some bloggers who have had personal experiences with those situations and maybe even have an expert join the call, too.

That way our readers can get specific questions answered perhaps.

My brain is still swarming with ideas.   My goal in the next week is to create a timeline of events for the 90 day period.

I would love to help with answering questions. I have paid off a car and mortgage debt, so I can answer questions on those. I also work in the industry so I could probably answer student loan and credit card debt questions as well.

I am in Canada and we have universal healthcare so the medical debt questions would be better answered by other bloggers.

I'm in!

We don't have any consumer debt, but I think most of my readers has student loans.

I haven't focused on debt much on my site and I probably should write a few articles anyway.

I would suggest to survey your readers and find out.  Actually, I would encourage you all to survey your readers and find out.  You would be surprised (I know I was) on how much debt impacts their life.   Here's the free survey I did with Survey Monkey in case you want to borrow the questions.

Yes, I think dedicated hangouts are a good idea.  I hadn't thought of outstanding medical bills – that's a good one. Just tried to brainstorm types of debt.  I was surprised to find a CNBC article that lists Payday Advances as a top 10 consumer debt issue.  I don't know how many PF blog readers would have that kind, but it was interesting to see.

Other kinds of consumer debt mentioned, some obvious, some not: small business loans, auto loans, tax debt, home equity LOC, mortgage
