Thinking of running a giveaway campaign to increase readership – what is better, social media increase or something else?

Hi All,

I am thinking to run a giveaway on my site and was wondering what would be the best goal from such a thing- should I increase facebook likes, or comments on posts, or twitter followers, or all of them?

What has your experience been with a giveaway, what tools did you use to run it and what exposure did it get you?

I was thinking something fairly attractive as a prize, maybe in the $200 range, something like a Nexus 7 or whatnot.

I thought to promote it through requiring a Retweet as part of the entry so it spreads, but not sure what else – a FB like, or a comment, or what?

Happy to hear some thoughts from you folk.

Cheers,

Matt

As far as what social media is best, honestly try for all of them. But the method that I've had the best success with is Twitter. Although I've only done group giveaways and cannot give you any input for a single site one.

On a related note, I've read on blogging tip sites that giveaways themselves don't increase readership. Most people who join a giveaway do so for the prize and not so much for the content of the site.

However, they can be valuable as a means of increasing social media followers which can give your site a boost if you prominently display how many followers you have somewhere on your site.

For example, people think that your doing well if you have several thousand Twitter followers, but perhaps not so much if you only have a couple hundred.

This is only something that I've read and I have no experience with it. Hope this helps.

The one thing that I remember from a session at FinCon is that making Facebook likes an entry can backfire. This is because you will end up having a high percentage of followers who do not interact with your page; thereby, decreasing the chances that you end up in someone's news feed. Your page will be seen as having less authority (with a lower Edgerank score).

But for me, I usually include Twitter, facebook, and subscribing via email. The social media ones are easy for most people. I guess you have to consider the fact that people will do it only to have a chance of winning, and many people actually have 'junk' email addresses that they use for giveaways.

Great input guys, thanks!

I'm leaning towards twitter too, since with the new followers and RT potential I think the impact of blasting my new posts will be increased, whereas people on FB and Email might not care about the message, if I could gain say, 1000 followers and get a couple of future RT from them on new posts exposure would be a lot better than just a comment on FB or the post….

I guess it would be nice to get FB up too – so I could start posting the Stats, as that might be a good way to lend credibility as suggested.

Will think on it more, but appreciate your insights.

Thanks,

Matt
