I feel the need to ask it anyway.
So I was looking at my stats today, just scanning the referrals to my site. I noticed a referral from the Huffington Post, but I don't have a pingback from them. Also, It's not actually a link from an article, but rather a link within the "top links on this topic section" within the twitter feed widget.
Well, my stupid question is this: would this be considered a link in from HuffPo, as in it will get greater weight considering the source, or is it like any ordinary link from random aggregators? I still have quite a bit to learn!
This is the page, and the link back to me is the first one right below the twitter box.

That's a good question. It looks like since it is in the widget it won't have as much weight as an incontent link but, the only thing it won't transfer is rank. It will still show up as a link back. I think. Not 100%
I don't think it's a randon aggregator.

That is a dofollow link, so it's pretty good! But I'm not so sure if it's static… it's a random pull from twitter, so I wonder if it could get pushed off the page with new related tweets or if it's locked in at the time the article went live?

Eric, just out of interest, how many visits do you get from a link like that over the time frame of a few days? Regardless of the link value, it is just great to be featured in such a way. Hopefully it gives you in any case lots of new visitors.

Yep, don't worry about the link value, no-one truly knows except the search engines. Just be happy that you've got some good free publicity!

The other thing to take into consideration is that it is probably done with Javascript, which the search engines can sometimes have a hard time parsing. So, hard to say for sure if it will get you any "juice" in the SEs, but it's a link from HuffPo which can't be all bad. ;)

Tom & LaTisha–I was thinking the same thing about the nature of where the link is displayed. But, I was happy to see that it was dofollow when I inspected it, so that's a positive sign.
Van Beek–I have only had a few click through the link, but due to the placement I wasn't expecting much anyway
Jon–I'm perfectly happy with the link, and not so much worried about the value as much as I am learning about the working structure of these types of things.
BB–That's where my confusion is. Not knowing a whole lot from coding I was hoping to get some real feedback like what you guys have given!

If you look at the page source, your link is very much there like any other external link. So its a good back link to have.

That's sort of my approach. Nobody 'really' knows what impact any link has. We can guess, speculate, hypothezize, etc. but in the end, it's all guesswork and with all the moving parts that seem to go into the rankings and such, the most important thing still comes back to delivering great content.

Money Beagle that was my thinking also. I wasn't really sure if a link counts more depending on what site it is on or simply if it is a link or only by the number of people clicking it. Either way it's a good thing

Actually, I believe it is important to know where the link is coming from. If you allow trackbacks from crap sites, you are essentially saying to the world and SEs that you shared it with them so to speak. I read somewhere that if you mark garbage trackbacks as spam, you're preserving the reputation of your site, the same way you protect yourself by not linking every single word or phrase in a post to an ad site.
My primary goal is to write for the readers, but that doesn't preclude me from being proactive and trying to get the most power from each post in terms of authority as possible. After all, if you lack authority, you won't appear in searches and therefore limit your exposure to a new audience.

I don't go as far as marking no-value trackbacks as spam, but I do put them in the trash. (Although not all of my sites even have trackbacks enabled.)
