I've read through some of the old posts on comment systems and noted some general negativity towards disqus, which is what I've been using. The two general complaints seemed to be that it required you to log-in and that it didn't support comment luv. It seems like the log-in issue has been solved, at least from my quick testing on my site. Comment luv is still an issue.
The reason I like disqus is mainly that it seems to automatically notify you of a response to your comment. But that may only be true if you have a disqus account, I'm not sure. I like that both as a commenter and as a blogger who's replying to others. What I dislike about the wordpress system is that you have to subscribe to the post and then you have to confirm your subscription in an email, and then you get notifications every time someone comments on the post at all, not just replies to your comment. To me it's too much effort and too much information to receive. Maybe there are ways to handle this better that I just don't know about.
I do understand that I'm sacrificing the ability to give other bloggers a link when I use disqus, and I don't like that aspect of it. But in my mind, fostering conversation is more important, and that automatic notification seems like an important feature. Intense debate seems to work similarly to disqus in terms of automatically sending you replies to your comment, and also works with comment luv, but I've heard other negatives about it, such as losing comments, which hasn't been an issue with disqus as far as I can tell.
Anyways, I'm interested to hear if anyone's opinion towards disqus or the other systems has changed in the several months since I last see this being talked about. Are people still as negative toward disqus? Is there any reason I should expect it to decrease traffic to my site? Thanks all for the input.

We use Disqus and like it. Ours is a Drupal site, not WordPress, and the CommentLuv module is no longer supported for Drupal.
I've tried several other commenting configurations on my other Drupal sites and Disqus does the best job at stopping spam in its tracks. We also get quite a few referrals from Disqus. You only have to login periodically and it doesn't take you away from the page you are currently on, so hopefully that isn't too much of a pain for people. (I know…it's remembering your login information! :) )

I use Disqus and occasionally considering switching to just the Wordpress commenting system instead. But Disqus does generally work well and I don't get many complaints.

I like Disqus – killed the spam I used to get in its tracks. If only it would kill my trackback spam…

PK – Get Simple Trackback Validation with Topsy Blocker (longest plugin name ever). Set it to send all spam trackbacks straight to the trash, and voila! No more dealing with them. It's extremely accurate.

I've used it for more than a year and it's worked reasonably well. A little buggy sometimes with updates to Wordpress or Disqus, but there is usually a simple fix.

I don't like disqus for a number of reasons, including
- load time: in Guatemala it takes long enough to load a page, and many times disqus doesn't load to I have to hit reload several times, and even sign in again when it has forgotten my login, lots of time lost.
- notifications: you do have to visit the site again to see the reply to your comments. On many sites, including mine, you can tick a box to get an email notification if your comment gets a reply, without having to subscribe (which is also a pita), and the email will include the reply. You can then chose to visit again, or not. It is good on the blogger's side to get more pageviews, but again with a slow internet, loading a page and loading disqus just to see my comment got a "thanks" is not very productive.
- profiles: If someone says something interesting, I want to be able to click on their name and be redirected to their blog. You don't have it with disqus so every time I click on a cool profile it takes me back to the post. Maybe it works but I haven't figured it out. So as a commenter I feel that I also may lose some referral traffic because people can't find me.

Instead of DMing you: do you know of a decent plugin to re-enable trackbacks with Disqus, or do I need to write some php (I can improve that)? I've been calling out people by site name on weekends, when trackbacks would be way more efficient.

Disqus drives me crazy so if I visit a blog that uses it I usually don't end up commenting. Some people love it, but not me.

A lot of Disqus sites seem to let you link to another account, and I've had good luck with Twitter.
As a general rule, I don't care for it, but if it makes others happy and I can figure out a pretty easy way to leave comments, I can deal with it.
My biggest absolute 'no-no' is if you stop publishing a full feed. That's an automatic bye-bye.

I sure don't… Not off the top of my head.

Thanks everyone for the input. Pauline, I've noticed that I get an email whenever you reply to my comment on your site. This happens without me clicking or confirming anything, which I really like. How do you set up that feature?
