Howdy Folks!
I'd like to hear your thoughts on the benefits and negatives of publishing on the weekend.
Weekend traffic is almost always slower than on the weekdays for various reasons.
Do you therefore post on weekends to try and improve traffic? Or do you avoid posting on weekends because of low traffic? I'd love to hear your philosophy!
I've been posting more on weekends because 1) there are less posts on weekends from the blogosphere, 2) the crush of posts comes on Monday, allowing me to read more instead of monitor/respond, 3) business crush also comes on Monday through e-mails and calls given lots of clients don't work weekends, 4) gives me more free time during the weekdays to do other things other than something online, 5) most of my traffic is search.

Sam

I used to post something every weekend. Since my weekend posts were typically link roundups and we all slowed down on those after the PR debacle, I decided to cut out the weekend posts altogether and see how it went. I haven't really noticed any difference in weekend traffic since I stopped.
Lately, my overall posting philosophy has been to write when I have something to say. That's working well for me right now, though I do try to post every Monday so my regulars don't think I fell off the earth.

Andrea, I like that philo to write when you have something to say. Unfortunately, I have too much to say and would be publishing two posts a day and running myself into the ground if I did that!
I'm trying to get out of my "post hoarding" mentality where I just keep my written posts private and not post b/c I want an existing post to get more airtime. Gotta learn to let go and unleash and trust that the search engines will find them once they are no longer at the top of my homepage.

I have changed to a new posting (Tuesday/Thursday) schedule this coming week for a variety of reasons. I think posting on lower volume days may boost readership. If it works, I plan to add Saturday or Sunday.

For If You Can Read, You Can Cook, I post a recipe on Sundays, inventively called Recipe Sunday. When I started, I thought that I do most of my cooking of new recipes on Sunday. So I figured that others probably did most of their searching for and trying new recipes on Sunday as well. My analytics data seems to back me up as Sunday is in 2nd place for traffic, with just under 16% of all my visitors. Tuesday beats it out by only half a percentage point.
I'll also admit that I get frustrated that that there isn't more activity online during the weekends. Not just blog posts, but forums and Facebook groups. I belong to one FB group for young professionals that is fairly active during the week, but becomes a ghost town on the weekends. I had the same experience with Brazen Careerist before they ended their board. The reason it's frustrating is because the majority of free time I have during the weekend is the weekend. During the week, I struggle to keep up with my favorite blogs and forums, but during the weekend I'm left twiddling my thumbs.

I actually never thought about it like that, but what you're saying makes sense. I post three days a week now – Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and it's going good. :)

That's a good scheduled. I've been trying Sun, Tues, Thurs, Sat, Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun… repeat.
Weird though why everybody publishes on a Monday and not earlier to get a jump start no?

I also follow the idea of posting when I have something to say. There are so many people out there who write so often that it almost seems that they have to reach on a few articles just so they can say that they stuck to their "schedule". I value my reputation [if I have any] and any impact behind my words/advice/opinions too much to dilute it with garbage. Plus, since I tend to write some pretty long posts, I also like to give it time to sink in and not rush something else so quickly to take away from the message of the current one.
Regardless of what some of the social research states, I have a really hard time believing that the majority of people are just sitting around reading blogs on weekends. I know for me, I happen to be at a point between work and wanting to take a break from the social scene for a bit, where I'm home but not going around reading stuff like that. It's mostly working on a couple of projects and doing some things with my own blog to clean it up on the backend.

Everything is rational in the end though right Eric? If we want more traffic then we will write better. If we are happy to throw something out there but might not be an evergreen post, but for fun, then all is good too. I'm currently pretty focused on building traffic, so I'd like to hear about people's strategies and thoughts on weekend publishing.

Let me ask you this Sam: who are you writing for? You know, the demographics. That will help you a lot in terms of figuring out if weekend posting will be beneficial to you. If a majority of your readers are 24-50 year old males who like sports, you may not steal their attention away from the football seasons right now. If you write for women with small children, they may be out during the days on weekends but home to read blogs. Location and time of the year would also impact traffic on weekends, I'd think. Maybe you can work on building Facebook interaction to drive traffic to the blog (I saw somewhere that Facebook usage on weekends is very high). You can also check out KISSmetrics, Social Triggers and Copyblogger for some ideas as well. I've found that they have really useful info on all sorts of stuff like this and more. Just throwing some stuff out there to see what could help

I honestly don't spend much or any time reading blogs or even doing that much with my blog on the weekend. It's pretty much family time. I guess without really thinking about it, I generally post along the same timeline when I read other blogs and when I have the time available to engage in comments, etc. So no weekend posting for me.

We try to post our best articles Mon-Fri, because they will get the most attention and traffic..
It almost feels like wasting good content to toss it out there on the weekends..
On the other hand, if we are hosting a carnival, doing a round-up, or even running a product review or something of the sort.. I'd much rather run those on the weekends, to free up the week for original content..

I used to post everyday, so naturally that included the weekends. I've also posted on "off" days on other blogs. Basically what I found was that the majority of people weren't reading my posts until Monday anyway, so I reduced my schedule. I do personally like to see posts on the weekend, but suspect I'm in the minority.

Sam,
Interesting philosophy on posting schedule, especially with writing for search engines. Another thing to take into consideration is that your search engine ranking is often supported by your community and the natural links that originate from the discussion. In other words, if you publish a post on Monday, where it gets lots of attention (and maybe natural links to it because it sparks great discussion), it will perform better (in theory) than the same post that was published on Saturday that didn't get as much attention.
Mr. Money Mustache's presentation at FinCon has really got me thinking about how to create a community around my blog first. Once that develops, SEO and income will come naturally.

I love reading on the weekends, but I rarely comment — that Nexus 7 isn't great for commenting. Since I measure successful posts by number of comments, I leave my weekend posting somewhat alone.

It's a great phenomenon to see search traffic and traffic in general ramp during the weekdays when presumably most people are at work. At work, I was so busy I had only lunch time or when I was in transit to check the internet or iphone.
I've thought up some good strategies for the surf at work crowd that I'll try out!
Part of the reason why I wrote "Too Many Comments Can Be Detrimental To Your Health" is so that I can reduce the number of comments on my posts in order to be OK publishing more posts ironically.
Perhaps there's parallels to why everybody goes to lunch at 12noon and waits in line when they could just go at 11:30am with no line?

I agree with both Money Beagle and See Debt Run – we spend our family time together on the weekends. Besides that, our weekend traffic doesn't change regardless of whether we post or not. So, we take a break and recover for the next week.

I'm always an 'alternate time' person. I go to lunch either around 11:30 or 12:30 to beat the rush if I go out. For years my work hours have been 7am-4pm mostly so I can avoid peak rush hour traffic.

I think the weekend vs. weekday debate depends on your audience. If you are going for sustainable evergreen (even seasonal) search engine traffic, the day of the week doesn't matter at all. You could still promote the heck out of an article you write on the weekend throughout the week, so I don't see that a post would really get lost unless you let it. If you are going for subscriber interaction, then I could see a weekly schedule being more beneficial, but then it also depends on your subscriber preferences. For instance, I subscribe to Couple Money in one weekly digest that I receive on Friday, I believe. It wouldn't matter if Elle posted during the week, in my case.
I like to write on the weekends because my husband is at home and I can steal away for a little while to write without kids asking for something every 2 seconds. Also, that frees up my limited weekday time to quickly promote when the opportunity arises. I can spend a few minutes here and there linking up to carnivals or commenting on blogs. Plus, most people seem to use Twitter during the week, so I can better socialize then instead of worrying about posting.
I have the most time on the weekends to simply read. I ALWAYS read Len Penzo's Black Coffee on Sunday morning. It stands out not only because it's excellent and funny, but because it's the only mailing list item I receive consistently on Sunday mornings. If you post regularly on the weekends, it could be a selling point. Just an idea.
