I've noticed my traffic does go down on Sundays, and posting better content will most likely not help with the traffic. I keep my weekly wrap-ups and smaller posts on weekends, and keep the meaty content to the weekdays. I was posting Tues, Thurs, Sat, but recelty switched to Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sunday (if I get the chance to write an article for Sunday). I'll let you know how it goes in terms of traffic. I'm about half referral, 1/4 direct and 1/4 search at this point.
Also, people read blogs at work. A TON of people. That's most likely why you see the Monday phenomenon. With our ADD society, you sit people in front of a computer with internet access, I guesrantee 90% of them will be on facebook within 30 minutes (or less), though they should be working.

I used to post on weekends but stopped several years ago. The way I see it, if I'm going to spend my time writing content I want as many people as possible to see it. I only write once or twice per week, so I choose to publish during the week so what I do write gets more exposure. The more eyeballs on a piece of content, the more likely you'll get a link out of it or get picked up by social media.

I've heard the argument go both ways: some people publish only M-F because that's when people are at work, but others say they love the weekends because there's less competition for fresh content, Google picks up on the post faster, etc.
Personally, I stick with the weekdays (right now I'm posting Tuesday/Friday), and really, even my Friday traffic is pretty low (I may soon switch to Monday/Thursday).

Hmm – Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday are my biggest days, but Sunday and Thursday are next, and about equivalent. Friday next, with Saturdays scraping the bottom (around half of a normal Monday).
It could be a topical thing – we have like 5 articles that drive the majority of our traffic, all of a technical bent – people probably don't care on Fridays/Saturdays. YMMV?

I used to post something every weekend. Since my weekend posts were typically link roundups and we all slowed down on those after the PR debacle, I decided to cut out the weekend posts altogether and see how it went. I haven't really noticed any difference in weekend traffic since I stopped.
Lately, my overall posting philosophy has been to write when I have something to say. That's working well for me right now, though I do try to post every Monday so my regulars don't think I fell off the earth.
I'm kind of like Andrea!! I admit here, my schedule has gone away. I write when I can, usually 3 times per week. I can barely review my stats let alone analyze them. I'm just too busy. I like to put something up on the week end. I also send out my email blasts on the week ends. I feel like there's less decent content on week ends. I should probably check out the stats ;)

I've just posted my latest, at the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning… Praise For Prose: 50 Prosperity Classics
If it's true I like the idea of very few other people posting on the weekends, as it frees up space on people's readers to get your content noticed. It's saturated during weekdays! I'll often try to get something out on a Saturday or Sunday, and the extra time I have available on weekends is good for proofreading and a bit of extra polish.
Stats-wise though, I've not noticed any correlation between posting day and traffic. I liken it to the stock market in that respect – totally unpredictable over the short term!

I definitely get less traffic on the weekends. However, since I've heard mixed reports on the benefits and downsides of posting on the weekends, I generally follow the "post it when it's ready" mentality, provided that I already don't have another post scheduled for a certain day.
In the long run, the success of a post will likely not be affected too much by the day it went up.
