What are people's thoughts on using Text Link Ads? I was recently approved but I've heard Google slaps you for trying to make money this way. Anyone has success and/or failures doing this? Thanks in advance :)

Here's the catch 22:
most advertisers are interested in buying a text link from your site if you have a good Page Rank (which is ruled by Google).
Then, Google will slap your page rank if they find paid text link on your blog. If you blend them in your site, it's harder for google to penalize you. However, text link ads require in insert a code in your blog. Therefore, it makes things much easier for Google to spot you and hit your blog.
on top of it, you can make a lot more through private deals instead of giving a high commission to TLA.
Just my 2 cents!

Google does frown on text link ads, but I've seen quite a few sites that have 3 or 4 text links on their homepage, and they are still ranked a PR 3 or 4, so I don't think it would hurt you that much. Just keep providing solid content and you should be fine.

Man, it's a tough guys. Thanks for the input. The reason I ask in the first place is because I'm having no luck with private ads! It's been frustrating to say the least :(

Wait it out.
Really, it sounds stupid, but with a 7 month old blog it makes sense to wait. You're still in the growth phase, and pushing for advertisements (most of which will be locked in for 6-12 months) stunts your income possibilities in the future. Who knows, by September, when your blog is 9 mos old, you might have 2x as much traffic/PR/Moz/whatever.

JT is right. Don't get to anxious to make money. My site didn't really take off until the 10 months mark. Just keep it up with the great content and don't worry about the money for now. It will come. Soon, your email box will be flooded with offers!

I agree with everything the financial blogger says. I would stay away from text link ads it is too easy for Google to find out you are running paid links and could easily penalise you. It is better to wait for approaches that allow you to be more careful with the placement of links. You will get a higher cut of the revenue and it is safer in the long term.

by "approved" do you mean an advertiser wants you? Just curious–didn't know if there is any other kind of "approve".

Frugal,
He is talking about the actual site TLA – google them. It is an actual company that works as a broker.

Thanks for everyone that has contributed! Since Google controls PR which means ALOT for private ads, I think I'll pass.

Jon, for a while I wasn't even seeing a PR for my site. Then one day it was PR 3 – strange.

I have TLA on my site and I have a PR of 3. The pay is lousy, though. I'm considering taking them down.

Thank you–I don't think I know what the site TLA even is.

Text Link Ads was one of the bigger brokers when Google officially clamped down in 2007. I'd think their plugin on your site would be one of the first tip-offs to Google that you're selling them.
I used them way back when but shut them off (after getting my payment, of course — they had a nasty habit of not paying you if you cancelled before the transaction occurred) after it became officially black hat with Google.
