I figure this is something that most bloggers are interested in doing so I thought it would be good to throw around some ideas.
Obviously I would say the first tip is write compelling content.
I've heard that list posts are good and commenting will bring curious people.
I also saw a boost from a few ads on Craigslist before but I stopped posting them after a while.
Any other suggestions that you've found to work for you?

1. Guest blogging on google page rank 2 or higher blogs
2. Socialize your blog. Post every article to tip'd, reddit, old dogg, stumble upon, facebok, squidoo, etc etc
3. Host a giveaway and socialize the giveway to all the giveaway sites; require participates to socialize your blog
4. Various SEO Methods.. Make your topics based on keywords; answer questions found in forums
5. Content, Content, Content
6. Backlinking strategy… see smart passive income for details
7. Networking with big time bloggers.
8. Comment on other people's blogs and reply to every comment on your blog
9. Network, network, network
10. Post high impact articles in various finances forums to socialize your content. type "forum: personal finance" or some derivative of that term in google to find forums
I've done the everything on the list so far and it has benefited greatly for me.
You can have the best blog in the world but if you do not socialize it or advertise no one will know about it.

This article links to several tips to increase your traffic via social media. Writing compelling content is great, but waiting until eyeballs show up sucks!

I started doing a few yahoo answers but it seems the effort wasn't matching the outcome. However, I did have someone else refer to my site as an answer to a question and it's brought in a few sales on a product I make myself.
I never thought to hit up other forums. I'll have to do a search for some other popular ones. Yakezie's my fav tho

Oh great. I guess that's a good take off from Sandy's rant: utilizing the past threads :)

Thanks for the refresher LaTisha. After re-reading the thread about when SE visitors ramp up, I am starting to think that my wordpress theme is hurting my SE visits. For some reason, it seems like the number of pages indexed doesn't even compare to sites that have been around half as long as mine (even though I write at the same frequency if not more). I am trying to switch themes, but I am waiting on a new logo. *sigh* I think I might wait until after the next pr update so as not to ruin anything as well.

Corey why do you want to change your logo? It's great!
Have you tried the breadcrumbs plugin. Evan mentioned something about the Yoast guide that I've been putting into place little by little. I'll try to find that thread too.
Yeah, I figured I would try to consolidate the discussion around previous threads as well. lol Especially after that rant! haha

On the topic of commenting:
1) Quality always beats quantity. Leave the kind of comment you would want someone to leave you.
2) If you leave a comment, hit the subscribe to comments button. I leave a comment to open a dialogue. What's the point of leaving a comment if you have no vested interest in it? (I don't think any blogger is going to hate you for putting more content on their site.) Don't want a billion emails? Make a comment-only email address.
3) If you're outsourcing your commenting, then just skip humans all together. Get a VPS, install a comment spamming script and go to town. No one cares about representing you more than you do. Thus, save the $x per hour/per comment and just automate the living hell out of it. If quantity is your focus, then there's no reason not to maximize your investment, right?
Writing my own comments has worked pretty well for me. I comment on no more than 10-15 articles a week (probably less) but get at least 50 referral visits per day from comments. Pretty simple, really. That's 18,000 people a year coming to my site just because I took the time to share an opinion on another site. It adds up.

I actually never thought about craigslist! Nice idea. My main traffic booster was to improve my SEO. It took some time, but it makes a big different when 200 people find you each day from Google vs. 5.

Are there tools/plugins to do this on an automated basis or is it a manual process?

Do you have a sitemap? Are you finding any errors on G Webmaster tools?

Be careful here. This can also be seen as spam. Sites like Reddit and SU are quick to ban.
Better to build up a social community and share useful articles that you find. Then you can submit a few of your best articles without it looking like spam.
And please, don't submit your roundups. (pet peeve of mine).

Yes, I do. I'm not finding any errors on webmasters. I have found one or two, but since fixed them. The concern came up because I already have almost 1/3 of the pages indexed on PITR as I do on 20's (which has been around a lot longer than PITR). I just figured out why… I stopped putting tags in my posts on 20's. ughh. Now to go back and fix that. I'm glad I was forced to look closer – I suspect this will help with my SEO – which has been doing poorly. :)

One thing I recommend folks do is try and write one Whale Post a month that becomes your landmark post. Once you have the Whale Post in place, you can highlight a couple other good posts from your archives and it becomes a virtuous circle. Over the course of a year, you'll then develop 12 really well-written posts and create a lot of traction.
The other part of the equation is just time. It's really after the 1-1.5 year mark where I've noticed a consistent jump in traffic. Imagine what you can do if you stick with it for 5-10 years! Treat blogging like brushing your teeth. Gotta do it regularly everyday, and it just becomes second nature.
Best, Sam
