I was once really very active here. I chatted a lot. I interacted a lot. I visited many, many times per day. But as I find my annoyance rising, and my visits decreasing, I figured a good vent was due. You might not like it, but here goes.
Top 10 Reasons Why The Boards Sometimes Annoy Me
- 1. You don't introduce yourself: you're not a challenger, or a member but you jump in and expect everyone to know who the heck you are. The boards don't come with a crystal ball. We want to get to know you better.
- 2. You ask how to make thousands of dollars when you've been blogging for a whole month. That tells me that you haven't done your homework. At the very least you should have heard of Problogger and have searched the boards before asking that question.
- 3. You whine that you've been blogging for a week and don't have 1 million visitors yet. It shows that you have no patience and I have no patience with that.
- 4. You come here just to push your product or your latest article and you're not heard from again…until you have something else to push.
- 5. You pretend to know everything. I've been at this for three years and I'm by far no expert. If I'm lucky I learn something new every single day. That's just the way it is.
- 6. You think that you're KIND OF A BIG DEAL. I would clear a path for you, oh Great One, but since you're Moses, I assume that you can walk on water. Don't come here just to brag and not share something that someone else can learn from. Each one teach one. That means you too Jesus.
- 7. You insult everyone else who says something that you don't like. This is democracy here. We all have opinions and are free to voice them, but don't get nasty. That's my job.
- 8. I did mention money before, right? Well crap, it needs to be repeated. If every single one of your posts here is about how you want to make money, or what ad opportunity you want to get in on, or the ad opportunity that you missed, I just ignore you and devalue everything else that you say.
- 9. You're jealous of someone else's accomplishments. Granted, most people here are happy for the success of others, but there are a few golden nuggets that slip through every now and then. Now, I'm the Queen of Snark, so I know what the kids call "shade" when I see it. Backhanded compliments are not nice. If you have nothing constructive to say, ignore the post and say nothing.
- 10. You make top 10 lists on things that annoy you on the boards and then post it on the boards. What a loser.
In other words, please do the following: 1) introduce yourselves, 2) search before posting the same topic for the 10th time, 3) be civil. If that fails and you can't do any of those, just lurk like I do. I'll slink back into the shadow now.
Thanks.

Yakezie has grown to be a very big community. Many of the things listed above are drawbacks. But, one of the benefits of such a large community is that you can focus your time on those that you enjoy working with. I think a lot of the things listed come down to inexperience and not really understanding on a practical level what has made the Yakezie a success. I know when I started getting involved in the forums, it took a while before I branched out into many of the different groups.

#2 – Hear Hear!
#3 – sometimes people need to be put in their place. Do it nicely enough but failure to do so will result in subsequent undesirable behaviours.

Thanks, Sandy, for a good laugh this morning. I love the list, as there is truth in every single one, and the delivery was humorous. Thanks for the reminder!

I want to second this! Hilarious, yet also serious (I don't know how you do it…) Thanks for the reminder, Sandy!
Also, please don't slink back into the shadow… :)

Uh-oh, people are going to start thinking the folks around NYC have an attitude or something!
Yeah, the forums have changed a bit over time. I guess that's bound to happen. Word gets out that this is a cool place to learn and such and they jump over for the benefits w/o the camaraderie first.
It is a little tiring hearing about how a site isn't successful and how many visitors and cash to expect after a few months.
I used to check my feedburner constantly to see if one more person subscribed when I started (not really knowing I'd be better off waiting until the next day). Of course that was over 4 years ago when I had a hamster running a wheel in order to power my internet.

Sandy, Glen you two made my day. What a start with laughter. I hope I haven't broken any of the 10 commandments.
Can administrators set a few pinup thread for the newbees to refer to for the questions on visitors and monetization etc which gets started once every other week?
How about moderators deleting unwanted threads ..to save rest of us?

Sandy, loved it, loved it, loved it. Someone had to say it and I am glad that someone was you! Who else could put it so eloquently and openly?
I did notice quite a change in Yakezie boards since I came back from my long blogging break. It seems that the boards used to be somewhat different a year or so ago.

Not a coincidence that this thread was started at 2:45 AM…
I agree with a lot of what you said… but had to point that out!
PS: I'm Pat…. (and I'll slink back into the shadows now too)

I laughed so hard at "That means you too Jesus" I think I might have hurt myself.
I think there has definitely been a different tone to the forums in the last 5-6 months. I read here several times a day, but I find myself leaving without commenting on the threads because they're basically 200 variations of the same thing. It's a little depressing.

I was the same way about checking it almost daily. Seeing your post made me realize that I probably check it every two weeks, and even then, it's usually when I happen to see it while looking for something else :)

Yes a sticky thread or two with an QA list for newbies is a good idea. That would avoid a lot of the repetitive questions. If someone wants to be ambitious they can write an FAQ thread for the purpose.
p.s. my name is Jim, now I'm not guilty of violation #1

I was actually thinking this morning that it would be nice if there was a thread listing answers to common questions. Even better would be if different people made long posts answering those questions in detail, and then just have one place that links to all of them. I know I have tons of questions, and some I've been able to get mostly answered just by reading other threads and some I plan to search the archives for and then ask if I can't find them.
It's hard, though, when you're new to a forum to figure out some of the community standards. Do a lot of people start new threads or do people typically try to stay in existing threads? (From what I've seen here, mostly the former.) How old does the last comment on a thread have to be before warrants starting a new thread rather than just resurrecting the existing one? (Haven't figured that one out yet.) To what extent is it acceptable to pimp your blog out? (I'm not really comfortable just asking people to click over to my blog or follow me on twitter without giving them a compelling reason to do so, but I've seen a lot of other people do it. Is that standard or are they a small percentage of the people here? I've seen other people be more creative and less direct about it, which is probably better all around because you're more likely to get long term readers.) I figured part of the point of the challenge period was to give people a chance to figure these things out before going into the members only forum.
This isn't the first forum I've joined, and I know you need to get a feel for the community in order to avoid stepping on too many toes. On the other hand, with this challenge you are given a time limit and one of the things you have to do is make yourself a part of the community, which can only be done by putting yourself out there and posting things.

This is hilarious. I'm sure I violate of some these. I still enjoy the forums immensely. I'll have to watch myself though, now that I've been up on notice :)

I love snark!!!
As for the feel of the boards changing, I have personally attributed that to my becoming more familiar with blogging in general. When I was "new" every new topic and new reply was exciting and NEW to me. Now, not so much. Still, I try to patiently answer when I can because I want to help those "newbies" the way others helped me when I was new. Yes, there is duplication of content but that is generally the case in this kind of environment.

@Single Saver – some searching would reduce the redundancy a ton. Laziness is not an excuse IMO.

What I would think could work, in your question about old advice, is just bump the thread, quoting the piece of advice you are interested in and ask whether this is still the most relevant and up to date tidbit of wisdom you should be reading/following. I'm sure someone will respond.
On the 2nd point, just to clarify, there is no time limit to complete the challenge. The 6 month entry is a minimum challenge time, from my understanding. Eligibility for membership occurs after 6 months and the Alexa criteria are met.
