Hello everyone!

I think I wrote previously about how my hosting company told me my site was using too much resources to be using a shared server, and that I needed to change to Virtual Private Server (VPS hosting).  Since I technically have 3 blogs (but only update 1), the increase in cost was minimal to just move all 3 sites to my own server.

What is interesting is my traffic volume as increase by about 40-50 percent since I switched to my own private server.  Has anyone else found this?  I can't think of any other reason my traffic would increase so dramatically.

Awesome. That is a huge increase! I can't think of any reason why moving to a VPS will increase the traffic, except, if most of the increase is from SE? May be your site is much faster now and so google (& other SE) ranks you higher?

In any case, congrats! it is a great increase!

How slow was your site before?

Site load times greatly affect how many visitors register in Analytics (the code has to fully load to show a full view), bounce rates (which you won't know about, since most visitors bounce before GA code loads), and pages viewed (if a site is slow, visitors get tired of waiting and go elsewhere.)

It's definitely normal to see an increase in visitors/page loads if your site is really, really slow.  Depends on the degree of the increase in speeds–moving from 3s to 2s isn't nearly as big as 7s to 3s, for example.

Edit: It could be IP too.  If you were on a…idk, Hungarian IP address and now your IP resolves in the US, then your US-based Google rankings would improve.  Your Hungarian traffic would decrease.

It is definitely from Search Engines, or it seems to be.  I haven't scientifically checked exactly what the percent increase is, and it is difficult because one of my articles got a lot of Reddit traffic.  However, take today for instance- my traffic at 3:00 in the afternoon is currently at 230 visits.  I haven't posted anything today, so it isn't like fresh content is drawing people.  (Normally on a Saturday I have about 210 visits.  I know, not very impressive traffic, but I am just over a year old.)

I don't know if people are just searching a lot this week or if this will continue, but I do like it!  :)

Could be speed and/or accessibility.  If the Goog bots can crawl your posts without problems then you can get ranked better/quicker (not that you wouldn't be ranked otherwise, it's just easier to crawl a site and do what they need to do).  Goog has said they take load time into consideration.

That sounds pretty awesome regardless of what the reason is! Hopefully your numbers continue to grow in the future as well! :)

It was totally easy.  Since I have 3 sites and had prepaid for all 3, they just applied what I already paid toward the cost of a VPS and moved all 3 to one server.  I didn't have to do a think, it was very seamless.

I do think my site loads a lot faster now, but I don't have the metrics to prove it.

Absolutely possible.

With the previous server prob turning a lot of visiters away, presenting them broken pages (server can't be reached) and what's not then it could be that. Now the visitors are getting through.

My max number of people on the site has been much higher since I went dedicated.

It really isn't that much more money to move to a dedicated server if you have multiple sites, and as I said, the process was seamless and easy.

If you guys are interested in a better hosting solution, I'd recommend ASO's "cloud" service: http://www.asmallorange.com/ho…..ing/cloud/

The 768mb ram plans and up come with free cPanel, and they're reseller accounts, so you can have as many domains on each plan as you'd like.  ASO is pricier than other companies, but their customer service is exceptional.  Fully managed VPS for $35 a month that is infinitely scalable is a great deal, IMO.

Their servers are in a "ThePlanet" datacenter, which is a unit of Softlayer.  Softlayer is without question one of the best in the business.

Several Yakezie members could go in on the hosting service above and save some money + get a better price vs. their current host.

If 10 went in on the $35 deal, and prepaid for 1 year, total monthly cost would be $30/month.  Add 1 IP for each site (so that links inbetween your sites maintain their Google-weight) and you'd be looking at $4/mo for pretty awesome hosting.

JT That is not a bad deal at all. I am considering going to a dedicated server.

Kris, did you move to a dedicated server? or a VPS? (I think they are different right?) And if you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you? or how much is the month-to-month rate?

Guys I have a question. Do you have to take care of the Apache/php update and installing security s/w in the server if you go the VPS route? If you I do have to take care of those things, how often do you do it and how involved is it?

(Esp. JT, can you pitch in? You seem to have a lot of experience in these things? ASO cloud people say I have to take care of those things?)
