Just curious if anyone else has seen this happen with their blogs.
I have been steadily increasing in traffic since my blog was created. The past month I have seen a huge increase in traffic, but have noticed that my Alexa ranking has not changed (fluctuating between 143,000 and 144,000) for about 3 weeks now.
Currently about 80% of my traffic comes from Google. I figure this may be the cause. That readers who come to my site from Google don't have the Alexa toolbar installed. But I wanted to run it by you all and see what you think.
Thanks for the any advice you have!

Most likely this is the case… as you know, only those who have the toolbar installed will lower your alexa. Getting traffic from google is a huge accomplishment and should not be overlooked (take it from a guy who is struggling…). If you are wanting a lower alexa, focus on commenting and the Yakezie forums. As many other people will say, don't worry about alexa. It doesn't matter that much.
Oh, also – remember that it is a 3 month average. So, theoretically, you could have had a lot higher traffic (who have the alexa toolbar) the last three weeks and have your 3 month average not change that much if 3 months ago you had a low point in traffic. It all balances out.

@Corey– I did not realize that it was a 3 month average. That is very encouraging. I have definitely been very satisfied with the search engine traffic, so I really can't complain too much. Thanks for the advice!

Corey summed it up pretty well. Most of your readers do not have the toolbar, so this won't help you Alexa Rank. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. Just keep increasing your readers and gain subscribers. This will pay dividends in the future. Much more so than your Alexa Rank.

I have definitely noticed peaks, valleys, and plateaus along the way. Keep growing your traffic and you should increase your ranking over time.
You're ahead of me though so I can't probably be counted on :)

I am experiencing the same thing. In the last few months, my traffic has increased 50% and yet my Alexa ranking has either not moved or decreased (number increased)!

I am experiencing the same thing… my traffic is through the roof and I am thrilled about that! But my Alexa keeps creeping up, which I am not happy about. I realize the "why" of why this is happening, but it is still frustrating to see such success with growth and yet to feel like I am somehow being blackballed by Alexa.

It definitely happens. Fortunately, as you continues to focus on fundamentals, more people with the Alexa toolbar will be visiting your site too. At least, that's what I tell myself. Cheers!

Yakezie forums is the best way to lower your Alexa rank.
Interact more with Fellow Yakezies, participate in Blog Swaps and submit to the Yakezie carnival.
These few simple steps will make a big difference.

I would definitely take the increased traffic over the dropping alexa – so congrats on that!
Any tips on how you've had such an increase?

Thanks everyone!
Seems the general consensus is that search engine traffic is much more highly coveted than a low Alexa rank. Quite glad to hear that. My main increase in SE traffic has come from 3 articles. 1 was a holiday themed article that hit right around Thanksgiving and has been drawing in around 150 visitors per day since then. The other two articles are financial aid related and deal with current events.
I honestly dont have any pro insider tips on how they are ranking well. I am going back through the articles to see if I can figure out why these rank well versus other articles that I have. I'll let you know if I find out anything good!

Same thing here! I had gotten down below 100,000 (right on the cusp), and am now around 120,000.

You can check this through Webmaster Tools if you use it. It will show the keywords that are ranking those articles and driving traffic to your site. You can expand off of that.

I second that sentiment. Alexa only measures a small subset of internet viewers, so if your broad range traffic numbers (Google Analytics, Quantcast, Sitemeter, etc.) are increasing, that really is a more telling sign, especially if you are getting more subscribers like Derek mentioned–at least in my view anyway

What you said is most likely correct. People from Google probably don't have it.

It is far better to increase your traffic than it is to lower your Alexa ranking IMHO, so you're doing well. Keep up the good work!

I agree with everything posted here already as that's sort of what's happening with my blog (although I have a lot of work to do to keep moving forward!).
Has anyone experimented with adding some sort of call to action on your blog where you ask readers to install the Alexa toolbar? Given that it's not really that important in the grand scheme of things, I wouldn't guess this would be all that beneficial. But I have to admit that sometimes I reeeeeally want to see that number go down, down, down!

We're not there yet, but I am expecting an Alexa plateau any day now..
If you are in the 100-150k range, it isn't especially surprising that this is happening.
To expect the rank to continue to see regular drops beyond that, is probably not all that realistic.
That said, I echo the sentiment of others in this thread.
If you are seeing continued google search growth, then you are on the right path!
