Hi all,
What is the sweet spot for traffic sources? Referring Sites, Direct Traffic, and Search Engines?
Thanks!

I don't know about a sweet spot, but I currently have 76% search engine, 16.5% referring sites, and 7.5% direct. From what I gather, the more search engine usually means the more clicks from ads.

Tons, tons, and tons. :P
From a monetization standpoint, as TCI said, search traffic is more likely to click on an ad, so it's great for CPC ads. As far as CPM ads, or sponsorships, a lot of direct traffic goes to show your influence/ability to shape consumer's minds, and is very valuable to direct placement advertisers.

I would prefer an equal split as long as the referring sites traffic is consistent.

Search engine traffic is what is valued on the internets. Referrals can stop at any time if you lose a friend or stop your networking efforts. Organic traffic (search engine) is a constant stream and is the most valued for income and site value.
That said, referrals are often more interactive on the site, so there is value there too.

TCI,
You have a lot of search traffic coming through. What's your secret?
Thanks for all the feedback! Always appreciated.

In the last month, I've had this:
51% Referring Sites
30% Search Engines
19% Direct Traffic
I can't say whether that is good or bad, that's just what I have. My Alexa rank is about 150,000 and my site has only been around for about 5 months.

My stats break down as follows:
- 20.28% Direct
- 46.35% Referring Sites
- 23.67% Search Engine
- 9.70% Other
I'm not terribly concerned about the breakdown. My interest is in finding out which articles are generating the most traffic. I look at what is driving search engine traffic, and the bounce rates for visitors with those search terms. Where I notice patterns I tweek the article and try to link to another article with content that might interest the readers.
My goal is to keep visitors on my site as long as possible and reduce the overall bounce rate.

I am at 40% organic search and 40% refering sites. My organic search went from 20% to 40% in February and I attribute it to my switch to Word Press from blogger. I did spend time to enter meta keywords on all my posts.

In Feb. I got
- Referring Sites 1,363.00 (51.40%)
- Search Engines 740.00 (27.90%)
- Direct Traffic 431.00 (16.25%)
- Other 118 (4.45%)
My search engine % is going up. Hopefully I'll get 50/50 refering/SE at some point.
