I'm sure we've all published posts in the past that looking back on, just aren't very good. Going through my archives I'm finding that this is the case with a lot of the posts I wrote early on for my site.
In this scenario do you prefer to go back and update old posts, making them more substantial and informative? Or would you just forget about it and write a brand new post covering the same topic?

When faced with this decision I usually factor in two things:
1. Existing backlinks. If you've got a lot of backlinks to that post already (both internal and externally) then you want to keep the existing url in place and just update everything else. I'd also reschedule the post so that it republished on the front page.
2. URL structure. If the url is "/2008-rules-about-roth-iras" or "/mint-vs-adaptu" (both outdated urls) then I'd think about republishing the content under a new URL and doing a redirect.
I republish at least twice a month and definitely recommend it vs creating duplicate content. This definitely comes into play with old tax posts. I just update with current year info and reschedule to post.

I have had to do this as well, and I usually just update the old post and republish it.

I just re-update an old post.
For example, like PT said, I have several old posts that I just continually re-update with information. They have good backlinks, and with a little social promotion, get back "fresh" with Google.

I often do more than just a small update. I usually go way back into the archives (2008-2009) and completely re-write posts that were on a great topic and still relevant, but could use a big refresh. I have learned a lot blogging over the last few years and the new knowledge goes to good use.

I haven't thought about that. to me if a topic is covered I try to search for other topics. I am now inspired to rewrite/repost old topics. In a way this thread helped me learning.
