Using Emails of Commenters

Now that I'm starting to get commenters, is it bad form to send a weekly or biweekly email to them, if they haven't subscribed to the RSS or by email?

I have their addresses simply from the comment form.

Would be interested to hear what others do, because most of the comments are from Yakezie members and I want to make sure I don't break blogging protocol.

Thanks

One way to not break the law is to include a line in your comment area informing about your intention. Else, its against privacy law

I wouldnt mess with that… if they wanted email updates they would sign up for them…I would be upset if someone starting doing that to me.

I agree.  I would get annoyed if someone used my address to send me stuff.  As much as the impulse is there I would put it to something else attracting them to do it on their own.  Set up a competition of some sort.

I wouldn't do that. Maybe you can set up a separate call out for people to sign up for an email newsletter or updates, which then might serve as your mailing list. But I don't think it's a good idea to take emails of commenters and use them for a list.

I've used a plugin called "Thank me later" that sends out an email thanking commenters for the comment, but I wouldn't go any further than that.  The CAN-SPAM law says that they have to explicitly sign up to receive further emails on a list or whatever.  You're better off making it super easy for them to sign up to the email list with a check box next to the email field.  I'm sure there's a plugin for that.  I might have to look into that as well…

You can also use an automatic checkbox that a commenter can check to opt in as they are leaving a comment. I use this on my site and it's pretty effective.

Thanks LaTisha – that sounds like it would do the trick. Going to check it out now.

Thanks everyone for your quick replies.

I sorta figured it wasn't a good thing to do, and wanted to confirm.

I am not interested in offending or bothering my readers in the least, which is why at this point I don't have anything to sell.

I am also not planning to put any ads in prominent locations because I'd rather earn a new reader than a new penny.

Thanks again for the advice.

I also use the thank me later plugin, but I agree with everyone else that sending something unsolicited is not a good idea.

It would annoy me to get an email like this to no avail. You could lose a reader by doing it.

Piling on to the general sentiment.  Unsolicited email contact would be enough for me not to visit your blog again.

Sounds like you've already made your decision (and the wise one!) but I'll chime in that you don't want to do that.  If I got something like that, I'd be clicking it as spam PDQ.

I think one thank you for commenting/visiting is ok, I actually don't mind getting those.  Any thing more would be annoying.

Maybe consider offering a free eBook as many others have if they sign up as an e-mail subscriber.

Thanks again, everyone. I had always wondered why every blog I comment on asks for my email. Maybe for Gravatar purposes? Not sure…

I added a checkbox to my comments to allow opt-in of notifications for new posts.

On another note, I've officially gone live in the Yakezie Challenge.

Thanks to everyone who has stopped by so far.

Looking forward to meeting more Yakeezers (?)

Yep, those are my sentiments precisely.

Having the emails certainly helps if you do have a legitimate reason to contact a commenter.

I think they ask for the emails to help keep down the spam and as a way to identify returning commenters.  That way your comments shouldn't get stuck in moderation after you have been approved once.

Ditto to both of what Roshawn and TFM said. Also, emails help if you need to send a personal response to a commenter.

I actually dont even like the "thank you" emails after receiving a comment…I mean, it's a plugin that sends out a generated email to every single person, its just another email for me to delete.  If you want to thank me, then say it in your comment back to me on the blog.
