When I come across something I find interesting, my first thought is always "can I make a niche site out of this?" I find that a couple of times a year I will be able to crank out a niche site in a day (I could probably do a lot more if I actually concentrated on this a bit more) that can turn into truly passive income. As I also mentioned, most of them make very little money, but since I never touch the sites again, it's truly passive income and the more you do, the more the money adds up.
One that I created last year was the first one where I used Youtube videos created by others as the basis for the site. I think there is a lot of potential here for anyone that wants to do it so I thought I'd share (I will be doing more of these). I refrained from doing this using other people's videos to create website content in the past because I felt it was taking content to some degree, but now that people can monetize their videos even when they are placed on other's sites, I see it as a win-win (they get more views for their video and clicks on their ads and I get a niche site that also makes money).
Not sure if there is any interest in a topic like this, but would be more than willing to explain in detail if there is. The site I set up like this made just over $100 it's first year 100% from Google ads.

I'm always interested to hear how people do what they do. If you posted a detailed explanation I would definitely read it.

There isn't much too it — pretty basic stuff. I think the most difficult part is keeping an open mind and checking if a niche site makes sense and a good domain is available.
1. Come across something cool on Youtube that you think might make a good niche site.
2. Check to see if there are any decent domains available for that niche.
3. If so, but the domain and set up the niche site.
4. Write a post on your current blog about it so that ti gets indexed by the search engines.
5. Leave it be and work on other projects.
I happened to see this guy who made instruments out of different types of vegetables which lead me to an orchestra that plays nothing buy vegetables when they give a concert. I simply posted the videos of them creating the instruments and playing them.
There are a lot of quality videos out there like that and if you can find a group niche of them, there is a good chance that you can make a bit of money continually from them.

What steps do you take to ensure that the owners of the video are ok with you using them on niche sites? Do you simply email them, or do they usually ask for a fee or a cut of your profits?

There are no steps needed. If the person doesn't want the video shared, they will disable the embed on site function. if you are able to use the embed function, you are free to share it on your blog/site. Google now puts ads at the bottom of videos — those ads are the video creators ads even when you embed on your site. The video creator gets any money from the ads in the video, you get any for your ads with the content explaining the video. Win-win for both.

I understand. That sounds like a great idea. My wife and I just started a niche site that actually needs videos in order to have any merit. Thanks for this information!

I have a site that is niche and am planning on doing this for some of the posts. There are things out there that people have already done so why do them again!

I have been making videos for years. It's a great way to get your brand out there and win some money too.
