Earlier today, I learned that my post about "What do do if you find out your co-workers make more money than you" was featured on Consumerist. I was really excited by this, as this was our biggest mention yet!
I figured this would get us a bump up to 200-300 or so page views (up from our usual 70-90), and was excited to take a look at our Analytics numbers at the end of the day.
Much to my surprise, we actually got over 6200 hits today!
Not only was the post featured on the Consumerist, but apparently it was also picked up by Reddit.
I literally hit the floor, when I saw that number, and am actually a bit intimidated by it.
I'm not sure what it means for us long term, but I am pretty excited by it.
Our twitter followers, RSS subscribers, and Facebook likes really didn't see any bump at all..
None the less, it provides great motivation to get that kind of exposure.

Wow congratulations! Obviously you won't get this current level of traffic to this post forever, but it might help you get a nice permanent steady stream of visitors for as long time. It must be a very good post, so I'll head off to your site now and take a look.

That is amazing! I would recommend adding a mailing list at some point so that you can "capture" a good portion of those visitors emails if they like what they see

Very nice Jefferson. Consumerist and Reddit, like hitting two birds with one stone. You must have been floored when you saw that spike in Analytics!

Reddit you can never know. But if it brought you traffic than all the more power to you! If you post the Reddit link here we can further help by voting.

A similar thing happened to me… now I'm a little bit intimidated by how different my average hits per day (around 150) is to my highest hits (1506). I guess it's just a bigger goal to go after now :).

We do have a "Subscribe to Posts Via Email" button available in the upper left hand corner.
When users click this link, it takes them to the Feedburner subscribe site.
However, we don't seem to really be getting many followers, this way.
Any tips on ways to reshape this a bit?

That is awesome, Jefferson and Michelle! Congrats.
I really loved that post and it is definitely worthy of a great mention like that. It sure is fun to see those HUGE spikes in traffic. Frankly, it's pretty awesome your site didn't crash and everybody was able to get through!
I had 12k in one day and it completely shut down my site. My bandwidth couldn't support it and you couldn't get onto my site for hours…it was extremely frustrating.
