Website load time is slow

Something has been buggin me lately.  I just did some website page speed test and I keep getting F grades.  Google Webmasters tells me my page takes 10 seconds to load completely.  This seems ridiculous since I use a CDN network and the W3 total cache plugin.

Does anyone have any idea why this is?  I've tried everything I can think of, but it's still incredibly slow!  Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I just loaded your blog in Safari so I could get an uncached version, and I didn't notice your homepage being any slower than other sites I visit. When I click on one of the categories at the top, though, there is a significant delay before the page loads.

Have you run the diagnostic tools at tools.pingdom.com? You can find out the load time of each individual element on your site to see where the problem may be.

Jon,

I just clicked the link in your signature and I got the loading time at 12 seconds for first load, and then down to 2.6 for second load (due to cacheing).

I would go through W3 and make sure you have everything enabled.  Also, make sure that you are using Smush.it to shrink images and maybe use tools such as FireFox Page Speed to see what is slowing you down.

It's not caching or your hosting; it's the size of your site.  I downloaded your index page to my desktop and it was >3.6mb, which is a TON of data.

It loads almost instantaneously to me. And I did use a different browser than I normally would, so it didn't cache…

Oh my gosh, that IS alot of data!  Might be my pictures.  I usually download the jpg and simply upload.  Do you guys smush it?

Seems like it's loading fast for most everyone, it might just be me.  But I'm still getting F grades on speed test sites.  Seems odd to me…

Use the plugin WP Smush It.  Then go through your media library (in wordpress), and click the Smush It button.  It will shrink all your pictures to the most possible without loss.

It took about 11 seconds for me. JT is probably right if it is 3.6 mb then that is huge, you should really be able to squeeze that down a lot

Also check on the number of plugins you have. I've heard that slows done site speed also.

Has anything changed with your host?  That can affect your load time as well.  Some hosts don't allow the same caching options as others.

Saved website link on local desktop from FMW, FFB and OCAAT (mine), then compared the htmls. Here is the comparison

Object Caching 3250/3536 objects using diskContent Delivery Network via cdn.freemoneywisdom.com

Object Caching 1974/2066 objects using diskServed from: freefrombroke.com @ 2011-08-25 11:35:42 –>

Object Caching 1543/1714 objects using diskServed from: onecentatatime.com @ 2011-08-25 12:02:46 –>

Jon you have too many objects on your link. From my home it was taking more than 10secs to load, but from t1 line (work) it takes 5-6 secs.

Also if possible raise a ticket with your CDN provider, since you are using one, unlike us.

I don't understand the issue with too many objects.  How should I go about reducing the number of objects?

As for the ticket, what should I ask them?

part 1 : your site designer need to tell from where these objects are coming in

Part 2: simple, ask them the same question you asked in this forum

When you have pictures on your site, make sure they are a small file size.  I like jpgs or pngs, but I also make sure the resolution is low.  I have to admit I haven't been so diligent in watching this with my blog, but in my professional life I always do this with our work websites.  It really speeds up the loading!

If you create a logo, get a high and low resolution copy of it.  You can use the low resolution copy on your site so it won't bog things down, and then use the high resolution copy for any printed documents (business cards, for instance).

Jon,

Whatever page speed test you are using should also give you the load time of each component. It is easy to check what is causing so much time. You can also see the response time of your cdn, take a screenshot of that (if the response time is slow) and attach that when you ask your CDN folks your question.

Now I am seeing your site loading faster than even mine. thats the benefit of using CDN!

But, you are experiencing temporary problems, hence, I think at this point you can zero in CDN issue. Nothing else but this is causing the problem. talk to them monitor site speed whole day, whenever it slows, employ Suba's technique and talk to CDN folks with proof.

OK, sounds like I'll have to contact my CDN.

Suba- I'm with Max CDN.

That makes sense. MaxCDN has always been the fastest from my connection when I ran some tests a few weeks ago. That is why it has been instantaneous for me…
