What affiliates are working best for you?

I was just wondering what affiliates are working best for you?  I reach the threshold at Adsense every few months, and I have made some money from Escalate IF I post deals, but I don't want to be a deal blogger.  Posting deals once in a while is okay, but for many of the affiliates that seems to be the only way to make money monthly.

So, I guess my question is two part–which affiliates work best and how do you utilize them to make money without overtly turning into a deal blogger?

The best one for you would be the one you run — the one that sells your own information product.

Write an e-book on a specific topic that you know very well ("Thirteen Weeks to Flawless Meal Planning" perhaps?) and sell it for $19 through EJunkie.com.  Pay your affiliates 50%.  You write the book once, sell it over and over again … and have dozens of WAHMs selling for you as well.

I'd buy that.  $19 for step by step instructions on making the transition from eating out to eating healthier and cheaper at home?  How much would that save over 20 years?  Six figures?

See what I'm getting at?

I just pulled down all my affiliate links as they were doing nothing for me, except Amazon.  (I found the search box works best for Amazon, but even then, it is only ten bucks a month or something.

I agree that the ebook is probably the best way to go.  If I was doing this full time, I would definitely be cranking out ebooks.  Who knows on what though.  :)

The way you said it made me laugh out loud. Sounds like a mass production of e-books. Laugh I totally agree with you, though.

The affiliates that work best for me are specific, niche products that I showcase in posts about saving money – I struggle with deal posts too. Easy Lunchboxes has done pretty well for me because I talk a lot about packing a lunch to save on dining expenses. Vistaprint does well, but mostly when I write posts about specific items, not just the random "Free gift products" posts. Groupon does very well for me, but it skates the line to deal blogging. It works best when I promote the ones I'm personally buying.

I think the trick is to have a personal connection to it – beyond the 20 word, here's a deal on this thing that pays me to tell you about it. Either with a review of the product or a post about how it saves you money or fits into your personal finance philosphy.

Great idea.  Have you written any e-books yourself?

An e-book really does sound like a great way to go. I have been toying around with this idea myself. If anyone has any more details about it, I would love to learn more.

Cool!  I agree with you that creating your own products is a great long term strategy. I wrote an ebook years ago and it bombed, but that's because I didn't know what the hell I was doing back then.  I had no blog and did no promoting at all.  I thought people would just magically appear and buy it.

I also used to sell article packs and didn't do half bad.  I'm definitely planning on offering more info-products in the future.

This sounds like a great idea.  I can think of a number of books for our niche.  Now, finding the time to write it, different story!

Does an e-book need to be of a certain length or have a certain number of words?

I agree.  I'm going to outline it in January and then break it down to small goals so it's not a lot of time at once.

I think it has to have enough content to be valuable to a reader; but there isn't a certain length required (that I know about!).

I've been working on an ebook for far too long. I'm just thinking too hard about it, I guess. Time to get it out there.

I use Commission Junction with some success.   Its about 25% of my income.   I've done well with MyFico ads but get most of that via one post about annual credit reports that gets a lot of traffic.  MyFico is virrtually all my income via CJ.   CJ is pretty easy to deal with and they have many reputable vendors (Discover, Citi, Turbotax, ING, etc).  But for some reason a lot of vendors on CJ decline me as an affiliate for no given reason.

I also get a little bit from Amazon Associates.   Maybe 1% of my income overall.  Lately its more like 3-4%.

I tried Linkworth while ago and got one ad for a couple months for around $30 I think.

I get declined a lot too, but I usually just go into the CJ mail system, send the merchant a message and ask why. I'll say something like, "If you could let me know what you're looking for in an affiliate, I would love to reapply when we meet your requirements." Typically, they approve me right then.

Thanks for the details about CJ.  I have applied there but have not used it much.  I should look into it again.

Regarding the e-book, I have two ides in mind, but I am a bit intimidated by the whole process, specifically the technological side.  Like the others who have mentioned it, if anyone has published an e-book and would like to expand on the process, I would love to hear about it.  Thanks!
